Google Opens NotebookLM to Younger Users as AI Education Race Heats Up
New access rules aim to empower students while addressing safety concerns
Expanding access to AI learning tools
Google has lowered the age limit for its AI-powered note-taking app, NotebookLM, making it available to Google Workspace for Education users of any age and to consumers aged 13 and above. Previously restricted to those 18 and older, the change opens the door for younger students to use the tool for study and research.
The goal, according to Google, is to give students smarter ways to digest class materials—from summarizing key points to creating visual study aids—directly within their own notes.
Study features tailored for learning
With the update, students can now:
- Convert notes into Audio Overviews, creating a podcast-style recap of study material.
- Build interactive Mind Maps to visualize complex ideas.
- Use the new Video Overviews feature to turn notes, PDFs, and images into dynamic visual presentations.
These features are designed to help learners understand and retain information more effectively, regardless of their preferred study style.
Safeguards for younger users
Google emphasized that NotebookLM for under-18 users operates under stricter content policies to prevent exposure to inappropriate material. The company also clarified that chats and uploads are never reviewed by humans or used for AI training, aiming to address growing concerns about data privacy in educational AI tools.
Part of a larger AI education battle
The expansion comes just as competition in the AI education market intensifies. Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced a study mode for ChatGPT, signaling a push by major tech players to position AI as a mainstream learning assistant.
With NotebookLM now accessible to younger learners, Google is clearly staking its claim in this rapidly evolving space—balancing innovation with responsible AI use.
