Enhanced Gemini AI: New Utilities Extension for Smartphone Task Automation

Google’s Gemini AI Assistant Gains Utilities Extension With Enhanced Smartphone Task Control

Google has expanded the capabilities of its Gemini AI assistant by introducing a Utilities extension that allows users to manage various smartphone tasks. Previously, users had to rely on Google Assistant for device-related functions, but this new feature integrates these capabilities directly into Gemini. Announced at the Google I/O event earlier this year, this extension enhances the assistant’s functionality, allowing it to handle tasks such as setting alarms, adjusting volume, and controlling the camera.

Key Features of the Utilities Extension

The Utilities extension empowers Gemini AI to control first-party apps and manage various smartphone tasks. These tasks include:

  • Alarm and Timer: Gemini can now set and manage alarms and timers on your device.
  • Volume and Camera Control: The assistant can adjust the device’s volume and operate the camera, allowing users to capture photos or screenshots.
  • Flashlight and Bluetooth: Users can toggle the flashlight or Bluetooth on and off using voice commands.
  • Device Modes: It can control Do Not Disturb (DND), Battery Saver mode, and even turn off or restart the device.

This update addresses a major shortcoming of the original Gemini AI, which previously couldn’t perform many device-related tasks without relying on Google Assistant.

Setting Up Gemini with Utilities Extension

To make use of this new feature, users need to ensure that Gemini is set as the default assistant on their Android device. The extension is currently available only in English, so non-English prompts are not supported yet. This feature is rolling out gradually and may take a few weeks to reach all devices.

Enhanced User Experience with Natural Language Prompts

At the Google I/O event, Google showcased how the Utilities extension could enhance the user experience with natural language prompts. For example, users can now ask Gemini to perform multiple actions in a single request, such as setting an alarm, enabling DND, and opening a website—all in one go.

Important Highlights of the Gemini Utilities Extension:

  • Direct Device Control: No need to fall back on Google Assistant for tasks like setting timers, controlling the camera, or managing volume.
  • Multitasking with Ease: Perform multiple tasks with a single natural language command.
  • Media Playback Control: Gemini can also manage media playback, allowing users to pause, play, or skip media tracks.
  • Lock Screen Accessibility: Some tasks, such as managing alarms and turning on the flashlight, can be performed even when the device is locked.

This upgrade significantly improves the usability of the Gemini AI assistant, making it a more integral part of the Android ecosystem and offering users a more seamless, efficient experience.
