Google Brings AI Mode to Search Widget on Samsung and Android Devices

A new homescreen icon makes accessing Google’s AI faster and easier—no need to open separate apps or use Search Labs.

AI Mode Comes to the Google Search Widget

Google has introduced AI Mode to its Search widget on Android phones, giving users instant access to its smart AI assistant tools. The feature is now rolling out widely, including to Samsung Galaxy devices and other Android models.

  • A new circle icon appears next to the Google Lens and Voice Search buttons in the widget.
  • Tapping it opens AI Mode, allowing users to type or speak prompts for AI-generated answers.

This feature builds on Google’s vision of integrated, accessible AI, right from your home screen.

How to Enable AI Mode Shortcut

Activating the AI Mode icon is simple:

  1. Long-press the Google Search bar widget on your homescreen.
  2. Tap “Customize”.
  3. Select “Shortcuts”.
  4. Enable “AI Mode” by toggling it on.

Once added, the shortcut remains instantly accessible without needing to open the full Google app.

Broader Rollout After Beta Testing

AI Mode first appeared for select users in the Google app beta in April. Now, with version 16.28, it’s:

  • Available to both beta and stable app users.
  • Reaching a wider range of Android phones, including non-Pixel and Samsung devices.

If you’re not part of Search Labs, you might see the AI Mode button under the search bar instead of inside the widget. Regardless of location, the functionality remains the same.

Quick Access to Google AI

AI Mode offers a lightweight way to:

  • Ask complex questions.
  • Get summaries, answers, and suggestions.
  • Interact with Google’s generative AI, without typing in a full search.

It’s another step in making AI more embedded in Android’s daily experience, reducing friction between curiosity and results.
