After years of criticism for being clunky and inconsistent, the Google Home app is finally getting the comprehensive overhaul users have long asked for — and it’s now powered by Gemini AI.
In a major update announced Wednesday, Google introduced Google Home 4.0, a redesigned app that brings improved speed, cleaner navigation, better Nest device integration, and deeply embedded AI features.
“The Google Home app has not been the experience that we’ve always wanted it to be,” admitted Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer for Google Home and Nest.
Performance Comes First
Before layering in Gemini, Google says it prioritized performance — with visible results:

Google also confirmed it is consolidating Nest functionality under the Home app, making it the primary control hub for Nest users moving forward — though the legacy Nest app isn’t being sunset just yet.
New Layout and Navigation
The Google Home 4.0 update simplifies the app down to three core tabs:
- Home – Manage devices, favorites, and dashboards
- Activity – See AI-generated summaries and event history
- Automation – Create and preview scheduled routines
Swipe gestures let users navigate easily between dashboards, camera views, and device groups. The camera interface also gets YouTube-style double-tap controls to fast-forward or rewind recorded footage.
Gemini AI Now Lives in the App
Gemini integration is where the new Google Home app stands out. AI now powers:
- “Home Brief” summaries in the Activity tab
- Event descriptions for camera footage
- “Ask Home”, a natural language search bar
- Routine and automation creation using plain English
- Energy usage insights, such as “How long did the AC run this week?”
For example, you can ask:
- “When did the kids get home?”
- “Did I leave the garage door open?”
- “Show me motion from the backyard camera yesterday”
- “Turn off the lights and set the thermostat to 70”
With Gemini, the smart home becomes conversational, contextual, and proactive.
Smarter Camera Experiences
Google is also bringing major improvements to Nest camera functionality:

- Passcode management for Nest x Yale locks
