Google Duo’s Final Sign-Off: Meet Takes Full Control by September 2025
Users must export call data as Google phases out Duo’s legacy calling experience
The end of Google Duo is finally official
Google is set to completely retire legacy Duo calling within Google Meet by September 2025, marking the final step in Duo’s gradual merger into Meet. Originally merged in 2022, Duo continued operating in the background for users who hadn’t transitioned fully to Meet’s updated features.
- The Meet app now displays a banner notifying users of the shift: “Meet calling will replace legacy (Duo) calling in September 2025.”
- Users are urged to export their call history and saved video messages before they are permanently removed during the upgrade.
A permanent upgrade to Meet is coming
Until now, legacy Duo calls remained accessible when one party hadn’t updated their Meet app. Starting this September, all users will be automatically migrated to the enhanced Meet calling experience, rendering the fallback system obsolete.
- Meet offers advanced features like live captions, screen sharing, interactive tools (like “raise hand”), cloud encryption, and stackable visual effects.
- To unlock the full feature set, both participants must use the latest Meet app version.
What users will lose in the transition
While the new Meet experience is more robust, it will lack some Duo-exclusive features that many users appreciated.
- Discontinued features include: Family Mode, Moments (photo snapshots during calls), and Knock Knock (caller preview before answering).
- Some functionalities like low light mode, Moments, and data saving mode are being replaced by Meet’s video lighting adjustment, on-device screenshot tool, and Meet saver mode.
Nest devices left behind—for now
The shift to Meet will not fully extend to Google Nest devices, which currently lack support for the enhanced Meet calling infrastructure.
- Nest users will remain on the legacy Duo experience, both on their smart displays and linked mobile devices.
- Google’s support documentation notes that no timeline has been provided for bringing enhanced Meet calling to Nest hardware.
What users should do now
Ahead of the September 2025 deadline, Google recommends taking proactive steps to ensure no data is lost during the transition.
- Export your Duo call history and video messages now if you still use legacy Duo features.
- Update your Meet app to the latest version to prepare for the new unified calling experience.
As Google fully consolidates its communication platforms, Duo’s long goodbye concludes. Whether this shift improves user experience or leaves gaps in usability depends on how Google handles feature continuity and device support going forward.
