The New Feature, Now in Beta, Lets Users Tag Friends in Group Chats—Bringing Messages Closer to Modern Messaging Standards
Google Messages Gets a Long-Awaited Upgrade
Google Messages is introducing @mentions in group chats, a long-requested feature that is now rolling out in the beta version of the app. The addition brings the app in line with popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage.
- Availability: Currently limited to beta testers
- First appearance: Spotted by Reddit user aniruddhdodiya on a Pixel 10
How @Mentions Work in Google Messages
The functionality mirrors what users are familiar with in other chat apps:
- Typing “@” triggers a list of group participants.
- You can select someone to tag them directly in your message.
- Editing supported: After tagging, you can shorten the name (e.g., remove the last name) and it still functions as a valid mention.
Better Visibility in Busy Conversations
Once someone is mentioned, a “@” symbol appears next to the group thread in your Messages inbox—alerting you that you’ve been tagged.
- Smart inbox cues: Makes it easier to identify messages needing your attention.
- Notification behavior: Google hasn’t yet confirmed whether users will receive special alerts for mentions only.
More Than Just SMS: Messages Evolves
What began as a basic SMS app has evolved significantly:
- Support for RCS (Rich Communication Services)
- Read receipts, message reactions, and message editing
- Now, @mentions, making group chats easier to navigate and more interactive
This shift aligns with Google’s broader push to modernize messaging, offering a user experience that rivals other major chat platforms.
What’s Next?
While still in beta, the feature is expected to roll out more broadly in the coming weeks. Once fully released, @mentions will be a game-changer for users active in busy or professional group chats, helping streamline communication and improve clarity.
