From prompt-based photo edits to AI-driven search in over 100 countries, Google is turning its Photos app into a creative and intelligent assistant.
AI Editing Comes to Everyone, Not Just Pixel Users
Google Photos has rolled out new AI-powered editing features to a broader audience, bringing tools previously exclusive to Pixel 10 users to iOS and Android globally.
- iOS users in the U.S. can now use voice or text prompts to make photo edits, such as removing objects or changing facial expressions.
- The update introduces natural language instructions, allowing commands like:
“Open my eyes, remove sunglasses from Riley, and make Engel smile.”
These actions are executed using face recognition from Google Photos’ existing face groups.
Personalized and Stylized Photo Transformations
The update also introduces AI templates and image-style transformations powered by Google’s image model Nano Banana.
- Users can apply artistic filters to create looks like Renaissance portraits, cartoon strips, or retro action figures.
- These options are housed under the Create tab and will roll out next week to Android users in the U.S. and India, where usage of Nano Banana is highest.
Meet “Ask”: Your AI-Powered Photo Assistant
A new Ask button is being introduced as a centralized hub for AI photo interaction.
- Users can request edits, ask questions about photos, or discover related moments with conversational prompts.
- To guide usage, suggestion chips will appear, showcasing tasks the AI can perform — from identifying people and places to surfacing similar photos.
This feature is now available on iOS and Android in the U.S..
Smarter Photo Search Goes Global
Google’s AI-powered search, first introduced in the U.S. last year, is now expanding to more than 100 countries.
- Countries include Brazil, India, Australia, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and more.
- The smart search now supports 17+ new languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
This enables users worldwide to search photos with natural phrases, such as “sunset at the beach in 2020” or “photos of me and Dad skiing.”
Transforming Google Photos Into an AI Studio
These updates signal Google’s ambition to transform Google Photos into a full-featured AI assistant for editing, organization, and discovery.
- The combination of AI creativity tools, prompt-driven customization, and semantic search makes the app more than just a storage service.
- By integrating tools that are context-aware, language-adaptive, and creatively flexible, Google is bringing consumer-grade AI to the mainstream user.
Google Photos has launched advanced AI editing tools and expanded its smart photo search to over 100 countries. Users can now use prompts to edit images, apply creative styles, and ask AI questions about their photos across more devices and languages than ever before.
