Google Turns Search Live Into a Chat-Like Call Experience

Upcoming UI changes aim to make Search Live feel more conversational, with familiar buttons and layout cues from actual phone calls.

Google Search Live to Look and Feel Like a Phone Call

Google is preparing to roll out a major visual update to its Search Live feature, bringing phone call-inspired design tweaks that aim to make the experience more natural and familiar. These changes were uncovered through an APK teardown of Google app version 16.28.59.sa.arm64 beta by tipster AssembleDebug.

From Search to Conversation

Search Live, introduced earlier this year, allows users to have real-time conversations with Google Search—a shift from static queries to dynamic, voice-based interactions. Now, Google is enhancing that interactivity by giving the UI a more call-like experience, signaling a shift from “just search” to a true conversation mode.

New UI elements spotted include:

  • A red “Hang up” button, mimicking the classic phone call interface.
  • A green “Turn off microphone” button, for muting your side of the interaction.
  • A notification labeled “Ongoing call”, making it clear that your session is still active—similar to how live calls are displayed on Android.

These visual cues aim to make users feel more connected and in control during live interactions with Google.

A Visual Continuation of Material You

The redesigned Search Live is part of Google’s broader Material 3 Expressive rollout, which has already reached apps like:

  • Google Keep
  • Google TV
  • Google Wallet

This design language emphasizes bold visuals, dynamic colors, and intuitive touch targets, creating a unified and aesthetically pleasing experience across Google’s ecosystem.

Why This Update Matters

These changes do more than just modernize the look of Search Live—they serve a psychological purpose:

  • Familiarity: Mimicking phone call UI reduces friction for users unfamiliar with voice assistants.
  • Clarity: The “Ongoing call” label makes it obvious when Search Live is still running.
  • Engagement: New buttons create a tactile sense of control, promoting longer, more confident interactions.

This design evolution shows Google’s intent to blur the line between AI and human-like conversations—with Search becoming a digital assistant that truly talks back.

What’s Next?

While there’s no confirmed release date for this update, its presence in the beta APK suggests a public rollout is imminent. As Google continues revamping its core apps, expect more expressive, user-friendly updates to follow in the coming months.
