How to Enjoy Apple Music on Apple TV: Setup, Features, and Tips

If you’re among the millions who enjoy both Apple Music and Apple TV, you have a world of music at your fingertips, ready to be explored on your big screen. Here’s a comprehensive guide to getting the most out of Apple Music on your Apple TV.

What Is Apple Music?

Apple Music is a subscription-based streaming service offering a vast library of over 30 million tracks. For a monthly fee (which varies by region), subscribers gain access to an extensive range of music, including the popular Beats1 radio station, curated playlists, artist-to-fan Connect features, and more. Available on Apple devices, Android, and with limited support for Windows, Apple Music provides a robust platform for music lovers.

Setting Up Apple Music on Apple TV 4

To start enjoying Apple Music on your Apple TV, ensure your device is equipped with the Music app. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Log In with Your Apple ID:
    • Go to Settings > Accounts on your Apple TV.
    • Log in using the same Apple ID associated with your Apple Music account.
  2. Enable iCloud Music Library:
    • Navigate to Settings > Apps > Music.
    • Turn on iCloud Music Library to access your music collection and Apple Music tracks.

Using Home Sharing

If you have music collections on your Mac or iOS devices, you can access them on your Apple TV using Home Sharing:

  1. On a Mac:
    • Open iTunes and sign in with your Apple ID.
    • Go to File > Home Sharing and turn it on.
  2. On an iOS Device:
    • Open Settings > Music.
    • Find Home Sharing and sign in with your Apple ID.
  3. On Apple TV:

    • Turn on Home Sharing and enter your Apple ID.

Apple Music on Apple TV is divided into six key sections:

  1. Library: Access your personal music collection.
  2. For You: Discover personalized music recommendations and playlists.
  3. Browse: Explore artist spotlights, curated playlists, and new releases.
  4. Radio: Listen to Beats1 and various automated playlists.
  5. Search: Find specific tracks, albums, or artists.
  6. Now Playing: View and control the music currently playing.

Using Siri Remote for Apple Music

Your Siri Remote can control Apple Music with various commands:

  • “Start a radio station based on this song.”
  • “Add this album to my library.”
  • “Play this song again.”
  • “Add ‘Burn The Witch’ to my song collection.”

When music plays through the Music app on Apple TV, it continues in the background while you navigate other apps or screensavers. Playback stops only when you launch another app.

  1. Play a track you want to add.
  2. While in the Now Playing screen, click on the small circle above the song image to access the More menu.
  3. Select Add to a Playlist and either add to an existing playlist or create a new one.

In the Now Playing section, scroll to the top to find:

  • Go to Album: View the album of the current track.

AirPlaying Apple Music to Older Apple TV Models

For older Apple TV models that do not support the Apple Music app, use AirPlay to stream music:

  1. On your iOS device, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center.
  2. Tap the AirPlay button and select the Apple TV you want to stream to.
  3. Control playback directly from your iOS device.
