Instagram Hits 3 Billion Users — Now It Wants You to Control Your Feed

As Instagram grows on the strength of Reels and recommendations, new tools will let users dial back the algorithm and regain feed control

Instagram Reaches 3 Billion Monthly Users

Instagram has officially surpassed 3 billion monthly active users, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram Head Adam Mosseri. This milestone reflects a tripling of its user base since 2018, when the platform first hit the 1 billion mark.

  • The app’s explosive growth is largely driven by Reels, recommendations, and direct messages (DMs).
  • These features have redefined how users interact with the platform — shifting focus from traditional posts to short-form content and algorithm-driven discovery.

The Algorithm Giveth, but Users Want More Control

While algorithmic content has fueled Instagram’s growth, it has also stirred frustration among long-time users who prefer seeing content from friends and accounts they follow.

To address this, Mosseri announced that Instagram will begin testing new feed controls in the coming months:

  • Users will be able to fine-tune the recommendation algorithm, starting with Reels.
  • A toggle system will let users remove specific topics — such as “college football” or “film photography” — if they no longer wish to see related content.
  • Eventually, these controls could expand to the main feed and Explore tab, giving users greater curation power over their Instagram experience.

DMs Take Center Stage

Instagram also plans to reorient the app’s interface, with upcoming updates to the bottom navigation bar. Notably:

  • The current content upload button will be replaced with a more prominent shortcut to DMs, reflecting the growing importance of private messaging on the platform.
  • This aligns with broader shifts across social media, where users are increasingly seeking smaller, more personal interactions over public posts.

Strategic Shifts Amid Growing Internal Pressures

Behind the scenes, Instagram’s growth has created internal tensions at Meta. Recent court filings — tied to ongoing legal scrutiny over Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp — reveal Zuckerberg’s concern that Instagram’s continued cultural relevance may be contributing to Facebook’s decline, particularly among younger users.

  • Meta has reportedly been working to revive Facebook’s image among teens, even as Instagram becomes the preferred social platform for that demographic.
  • With Instagram driving user engagement, Meta is focused on keeping the momentum — while also appeasing long-time users who feel alienated by algorithm-heavy content.

What This Means for Users

Instagram’s next phase is about balancing algorithmic growth with user agency. As the app evolves:

  • Expect more relevance-focused tools to help you control your feed — not just consume what the algorithm thinks you want.
  • DMs, Reels, and recommendation engines will continue to be core pillars, but Instagram is listening to feedback on feed fatigue.
  • Whether this new control will help retain loyalty while supporting growth remains to be seen — but the shift acknowledges the growing demand for personalization without losing control.
