OpenAI Taps Fidji Simo to Monetize ChatGPT with Ads

As OpenAI ramps up hiring for ad infrastructure, ChatGPT prepares for its next evolution—becoming an AI assistant and an advertising platform.

Ads Are Coming to ChatGPT—Here’s Why It Matters

OpenAI is gearing up to introduce advertising into ChatGPT, marking a pivotal shift in how the company plans to monetize its wildly popular AI product. With an estimated 700 million users worldwide, ChatGPT has become a global tool for communication, ideation, productivity—and soon, for targeted advertising.

Leading this transformation is Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s new Head of Applications, who joined in 2025 after serving as Instacart CEO and Head of the Facebook App, where she built and scaled one of the internet’s most sophisticated ad businesses.

Monetisation Mandate: Ads Beyond Subscriptions

Currently, ChatGPT’s revenue engine is subscription-led, with around 20 million paying users. But OpenAI’s ambitions—and expenses—are growing.

  • The company reported $12.7 billion in revenue in 2025, nearly triple its 2024 figure.
  • Despite this, it continues to spend more than it earns, making ads a critical next step for financial sustainability.

“We have to be thoughtful and tasteful,” said Nick Turley, who leads ChatGPT, emphasising user experience as a non-negotiable.

Behind the Scenes: Building an Ad Infrastructure

The rollout isn’t just theoretical. OpenAI is actively recruiting for both leadership and technical roles to build its ad ecosystem:

  • A senior monetisation leader is being sought to oversee advertising and subscription revenue.
  • Technical hires include roles like “Growth Paid Marketing Platform Engineer”, suggesting plans to:
    • Build campaign management tools
    • Integrate with major ad networks
    • Enable real-time attribution and targeting

These moves point to the creation of a self-serve ad platform, likely similar to Meta or Google’s systems—streamlined, scalable, and potentially embedded within user workflows.

Fidji Simo: The Right Architect for the Ad Era

Simo’s track record makes her a strategic hire for this moment.

  • At Facebook, she led the transformation of the app into an ads-first, commerce-oriented platform.
  • At Instacart, she scaled partnerships and revenue by blending commerce with content.
  • At OpenAI, she’s now tasked with transforming a viral product into a long-term business—without alienating users.

Her approach balances aggressive monetisation with user trust and platform integrity, a balance OpenAI will need to get right as it tiptoes into the world of ads.

User Experience: The Delicate Balance

Unlike social media or search, ChatGPT is a utilitarian tool—people use it for work, study, creativity, and life planning. Introducing ads into such a context presents a UX challenge, not just a monetisation one.

OpenAI has stated that:

  • Ads will be tasteful and context-aware.
  • The company is exploring native ad formats, potentially aligned with conversation topics, goals, or app integrations.
  • Feedback loops will be crucial to avoid the risk of intrusiveness or credibility loss.

The goal? Make ChatGPT more helpful—not more cluttered.

What’s Next: Not If, But When

While there’s no official launch date, the groundwork is clearly being laid. The next few months may see:

  • Pilot ad formats for specific Pro/Plus users
  • Brand partnerships in educational, productivity, or shopping-related queries
  • In-app monetisation experiments tied to integrations like Calendar, Gmail, or search

And once the infrastructure is tested, a broader rollout across tiers could follow—especially if user feedback remains positive.
