OpenAI’s Shopping Revolution: Can ChatGPT Replace Amazon and Google?

With agentic shopping and open-source protocols, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is moving from assistant to digital storefront — and taking on tech’s biggest players

ChatGPT Now Lets You Shop — Without Leaving the Chat

OpenAI is pushing into agentic e-commerce with the launch of Instant Checkout, a new shopping feature that lets ChatGPT users buy products directly inside a conversation — no redirects, no app switching.

  • Available to U.S. users (Free, Plus, and Pro) for purchases from Etsy sellers, with Shopify merchants like Glossier, Skims, and Vuori coming soon.
  • Users can complete purchases using Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, or credit cards — all without leaving ChatGPT.

This is more than just convenience. It’s a paradigm shift in digital commerce, one that could challenge traditional gatekeepers like Amazon and Google.

From Discovery to Purchase — All in One AI Flow

Previously, ChatGPT could recommend products, show images and reviews, and provide direct links to retailers in response to user queries like:

  • “What should I get my friend who loves ceramics?”
  • “Best carry-on bags for business travel?”

Now, with one tap, users can go from curation to checkout, skipping search engines and marketplaces entirely.

This seamless journey represents the rise of AI-native shopping — where a conversational agent becomes both the guide and the cashier.

Challenging the Gatekeepers of Retail Discovery

Traditionally, product discovery has flowed through:

  • Google, where ranking is often skewed by ads and paid placements.
  • Amazon, where platform fees and favoritism toward house brands are common.

OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a neutral, relevance-based alternative.

“Product results are organic and unsponsored,” OpenAI stated, and merchants will pay only a small fee per completed purchase.

This shifts power away from search engines and e-commerce monopolies toward AI agents, who now control the starting point of the shopping journey — and potentially, the end.

The Rise of Agentic Shopping — and the Race to Define It

OpenAI isn’t alone. The agentic shopping model — where AI agents manage everything from product search to checkout — is quickly becoming a battleground:

  • Perplexity rolled out in-chat shopping and payment features last year.
  • Microsoft launched Copilot Merchant Program, enabling AI storefronts.
  • Google recently introduced its own Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).

In response, OpenAI is open-sourcing its Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) — the infrastructure powering Instant Checkout — in partnership with Stripe.

“Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI,” said Will Gaybrick, President of Tech & Business at Stripe.

ACP lets developers and merchants integrate with ChatGPT directly, making it easier to turn AI agents into point-of-sale channels.

Privacy, Trust, and Control in the New Shopping Flow

Some users may be uneasy handing payment and shipping data to an AI assistant. OpenAI addressed this head-on:

  • Merchants, not OpenAI, handle orders, payments, and fulfillment.
  • ChatGPT acts only as a secure intermediary, transmitting data using existing merchant systems.

Still, OpenAI’s role as retail discovery engine, checkout handler, and potential protocol owner signals a shift in who controls the online shopping funnel.

If widely adopted, ACP could make OpenAI the architect of AI-driven commerce, just as Amazon once defined 1-click checkout.

What’s Next: A Power Shift in E-Commerce

This move sets the stage for a reordering of retail power dynamics. By embedding checkout into the AI layer:

  • OpenAI could disintermediate Amazon and weaken Google’s ad-driven search commerce model.
  • Merchants could retain more control and margin, avoiding steep platform fees.
  • Consumers could get faster, curated shopping based on context — not just keywords.

But it also raises questions: Who controls what you see? What gets recommended? Who benefits from those choices?

With ACP open-sourced and Shopify integrations imminent, OpenAI isn’t just dabbling in shopping — it’s aiming to redefine the infrastructure behind it.

OpenAI’s new Instant Checkout lets ChatGPT users shop and pay within the app, bypassing traditional platforms like Google and Amazon. Backed by Stripe and the open-sourced Agentic Commerce Protocol, OpenAI is positioning itself as a powerful new gatekeeper in AI-driven e-commerce.
