Unique Navigation Experience Combines Google’s Mapping Tech with Rivian’s EV-Specific Trip Planning
Collaboration Overview
After 18 months of development, Rivian and Google have unveiled a custom integration of Google Maps into Rivian’s electric vehicles and mobile app.
- This is not Android Auto or Google Built-In.
- Instead, it’s a deep API-level integration, combining Google’s mapping technology with Rivian’s EV-specific software stack.
The rollout marks a major software update for Rivian, aligning with its long-term strategy of differentiating through software.
- This strategy also helped Rivian secure a joint venture with Volkswagen earlier in 2025.
What Makes This Integration Different
Unlike standard Google Maps installations in cars, Rivian’s version is custom-built, maintaining the brand’s unique UI, trip planner, and EV charging features.
- Replaces Mapbox, Rivian’s former map provider.
- Fully merges Google’s ETA, traffic, places, and satellite imagery with Rivian’s core navigation tools.
“We didn’t want just the default Google Maps,” said Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s chief of software.
“Google really embraced a more open model of collaboration, and we’re super happy with the result.”
Key Features in the New Maps
Rivian’s new Google-powered navigation system includes:
- EV Range Estimates and ‘Range on Arrival’ predictions.
- Charging stop suggestions, powered by A Better Routeplanner.
- Charging site scores, based on real-time plug-in data from Rivian vehicles.
- Tappable points of interest with rich metadata from Google Maps.
- Satellite imagery, traffic updates, and incident alerts.
App Enhancements and Rollout
The Rivian mobile app is also receiving updates that mirror the in-vehicle experience. New features include:
- Trip planning tools, including traffic overlays and incident alerts.
- Place photos and descriptions for better destination context.
- Satellite view (available with a Connect+ subscription).
- Continued ability to share destinations between the app and the vehicle.
The update is rolling out starting today via over-the-air updates to Rivian vehicles and mobile devices.
Strategic Software Positioning
Rivian’s navigation overhaul reflects a broader move in the EV sector to make software a differentiator, not just a backend tool.
- Unlike competitors relying solely on Google or Apple’s built-in solutions, Rivian merges brand identity with mapping power.
- This deeper integration may set a precedent for other automakers seeking custom, branded in-car experiences.
