Samsung Enhances Camera App in One UI 8.0 with Custom Swipe Features

One UI 8.0 Introduces Swipe Gesture for Faster Camera Controls

Samsung refines user experience with quicker access to settings in its latest camera app update

Streamlined design carried forward

Samsung has further enhanced its camera app interface in One UI 8.0, building on the minimalist redesign introduced in One UI 7.0. While the previous update focused on decluttering the viewport, the latest version introduces a new swipe gesture to make camera controls faster and more intuitive.

  • The simplified layout from One UI 7.0 removed distractions, helping users focus on capturing great shots.
  • Core tools were shifted from the top bar to the bottom area, improving reachability and usability.

Smarter control layout via fly-out menu

In One UI 8.0, the essential camera options are now housed in a compact fly-out menu, located beside the zoom level selector. This redesign minimizes visual clutter while keeping settings within easy reach.

  • Options inside the fly-out include flash, timer, resolution, camera ratio, motion photo, filters, exposure, and face settings.
  • Users can either tap on the fly-out menu button or touch the screen to retract the list seamlessly.

Swipe gesture adds speed and flexibility

The major addition in One UI 8.0 is the ability to assign a vertical swipe gesture on the camera preview to open quick controls, making camera settings more accessible during use.

  • Traditionally, horizontal swipes switch between camera modes, and vertical swipes toggle front/rear cameras.
  • Now, users can go to Settings > “Swipe preview up/down to” and choose “Open Quick controls” to customize the gesture.

Customizable for personal preference

If the user prefers to keep the original vertical swipe behavior, they can stick with the default camera switch function. Alternatively, choosing “Off” disables the vertical gesture entirely, leaving only horizontal swipes active.

  • This flexible customization lets users tailor the camera app to their shooting habits and preferences.
  • It ensures a smooth, uninterrupted experience whether you’re adjusting flash settings or switching lenses.

With this new feature, One UI 8.0 enhances the interactivity and efficiency of Samsung’s camera interface, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to user-centered software evolution.
