Samsung Finally Adds Fingerprint Personalization in LockStar

A long-requested feature is finally coming to Galaxy devices, adding personalization and flair to fingerprint unlock animations.

LockStar’s One UI 8 Upgrade Brings Fingerprint Effects to Life

Samsung is set to deliver one of the most visually satisfying enhancements in its upcoming One UI 8 update—five new fingerprint unlock effects, rolling out through the LockStar module of Good Lock.

Currently, Galaxy phones offer a single “Ripple” effect for fingerprint unlocks. But with One UI 8, users will finally gain customizable animation styles, adding more fun, flair, and feedback to an otherwise overlooked part of the Galaxy experience.

What to Expect from the New Fingerprint Effects

According to a preview shared by Ice Universe on Weibo and Samsung’s own teasers, the LockStar One UI 8 update will include:

  • Five unlock animation styles to start
  • Previewed effects include:
    • A circular wave animation
    • A playful ghost emoji animation
    • Three additional styles to be revealed at launch

These animations will play on the lock screen during fingerprint authentication, adding a customized visual experience without affecting performance or security.

While this feature isn’t built into the core system settings, it will be easily accessible via the LockStar plugin—one of the most popular modules in Samsung’s Good Lock suite.

Why It Matters: Bridging the Gap with Rivals

Samsung users have long requested more visual options for fingerprint authentication—something rival brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo have already embraced. Until now, Samsung only provided a static on/off toggle for the Ripple effect.

The addition of fingerprint animations helps Samsung:

  • Enhance user personalization
  • Catch up to feature-rich competitors
  • Align with the playful UI tone emerging in One UI 8

For fans of aesthetic control and interface customization, this is a small but welcome change that enhances daily interactions.

Rollout Details and Compatibility

  • The new LockStar update is expected to roll out within July, alongside or shortly after the stable One UI 8 release.
  • Samsung hasn’t specified which older models will receive the feature, but it is working to ensure broad support across Galaxy phones and tablets.
  • Updates and additional fingerprint styles may be added later, expanding the range of visual effects through future LockStar updates.

How to Access the New Fingerprint Effects (Once Available)

  1. Update to One UI 8
  2. Open the Good Lock app
  3. Navigate to LockStar
  4. Go to the Fingerprint Animation Effects section
  5. Choose your preferred effect from the list
