OpenAI’s AI video app teases a wave of updates including pet personas, basic editing tools, real-time cameo discovery, and a long-awaited Android version
Sora’s Viral Growth Continues — Now With a Roadmap
Less than a month after its limited launch, Sora, OpenAI’s AI-generated video app, is getting a major update that builds on its early viral momentum. The app, currently No. 1 on the App Store in the U.S. and Canada, will soon introduce:
- Pet and object cameos
- Basic video editing tools
- Improved social features, including university- and group-based channels
- A long-awaited Android version (now in pre-registration)
These updates were revealed on X by Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, who says the goal is to build the app openly, sharing features as they ship.
Make Your Dog (or Stuffed Animal) a Star
One of the most anticipated features: character cameos for pets and objects.
Previously, Sora’s “cameo” system let users record a short reference video to create an AI persona of themselves — essentially a video-ready clone friends could use in shared generations.
Now, users will be able to create cameos for:
- Pets (dogs, cats, guinea pigs, etc.)
- Toys and plushies
- Everyday objects with sentimental or fun value
Peebles expects this will lead to a wave of creative, chaotic cameo content. To help users navigate this, the generation UI will be updated to showcase trending cameos in real time.
New Creation Tools and Video Editing Features
Sora is also adding basic video editing functionality, starting with the ability to:
- Stitch multiple clips together
- Mix and match different cameo scenes
This marks the beginning of a broader push into video storytelling, with more advanced editing tools coming later.
Turning Up the Social Experience
To further expand community interaction, Sora will soon include social channels organized around shared affiliations, such as:
- Universities
- Companies
- Clubs and sports teams
This update hints at OpenAI’s broader ambition to make Sora more than a creation tool — but a social network for AI-generated content.
Android Version: “Actually Coming Soon”
Sora is already listed for pre-registration on Google Play, but OpenAI has yet to provide an official launch date. Peebles confirmed that the Android rollout is imminent, saying it’s “actually coming soon,” though details remain vague.
Performance, Moderation, and What’s Next
Sora users have raised concerns about strict moderation, which can sometimes block innocuous video generations. OpenAI says it is working to refine the moderation system and improve app performance overall as it prepares for broader rollout.
Despite being invite-only and available only in the U.S. and Canada, Sora has already hit 2 million downloads, according to Appfigures. That’s an impressive start — and a sign of what’s to come if the app goes fully public.
