India, Indonesia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa now get access to Spotify’s tiered Premium offerings, including lossless audio, AI DJ, and more.
Spotify Revamps Premium Tiers in Emerging Markets
Spotify is restructuring its Premium plans in five key markets — India, Indonesia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa — introducing three new tiers: Premium Lite, Premium Standard, and Premium Platinum.
The move marks a significant shift in pricing and features, giving users more choice — but also reducing some benefits for new subscribers who opt out of higher-tier plans.
New Premium Plans: A Breakdown
Here’s what the new subscription tiers offer in India (similar pricing structure applies in other markets, adjusted for currency):
| Plan | Price (INR / USD) | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Lite | ₹139 / $1.57 | Ad-free listening, 160 kbps audio quality |
| Standard | ₹199 / $2.25 | Offline downloads, 320 kbps audio quality |
| Platinum | ₹299 / $3.37 | Lossless audio, AI DJ, AI playlist tools, 3 shared seats, DJ software integration |
Notably, existing subscribers can keep their current plans. New subscribers, however, must choose from these updated tiers.
The Long-Awaited Arrival of Lossless Audio
Spotify’s lossless audio feature, previously hinted at in reports about a “super premium” plan, is now officially part of the Premium Platinum tier.
- Offers FLAC quality at 24-bit/44.1 kHz
- Competes with rivals like Apple Music and Tidal, which already support lossless streaming
- Available now only in the five launch countries, though a global rollout is likely in the near future
Until now, Spotify had withheld lossless access from many emerging markets, making this a notable first for users in these regions.
AI DJ, Playlist Tools, and DJ Software Integration
Spotify is also leveraging its AI investments in the new Platinum tier:
- AI DJ: Curated playback with voice commentary and smart transitions
- AI Playlist Generator: Create mood- or theme-based playlists with text prompts
- DJ App Integration: Use Spotify libraries with rekordbox, Serato, and djay for creating sets and mixes
These tools bring pro-level customization and interactive music discovery to everyday users and hobbyist DJs alike.
What’s Missing for Lower-Tier Users?
While the new structure adds options, it also limits access:
- The ₹139 Premium Standard plan (now Lite) no longer includes offline downloads or 320 kbps quality
- The popular Family Plan (₹229 for six users) has been phased out for new subscribers
- Only Platinum allows account sharing, but for just three users instead of six
This change means users who don’t value lossless streaming or AI features may now pay more for less.
A Global Pricing Strategy Shift
Spotify’s latest rollout is part of its broader tiered pricing overhaul:
- U.S. Premium jumped from $9.99 to $11.99 over two years
- Many markets saw price bumps in 2023–2024 as Spotify pursued higher margins and ARPU growth
The updated plans reflect Spotify’s dual strategy to expand high-margin features like lossless and AI tools, while testing pricing elasticity in rapidly growing markets.
