The app’s new messaging tools aim to deepen user interaction and bring its chat experience closer to platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp.
TikTok Adds New Communication Tools to DMs
TikTok is enhancing its direct messaging features, giving users the ability to send voice notes and share up to nine images or videos in both one-on-one and group chats.
- Voice notes can be up to 60 seconds long.
- Users can share media from their camera roll or record on the spot, with optional editing tools.
- These updates are rolling out gradually over the next few weeks, the company confirmed to TechCrunch.
The changes mark a shift in TikTok’s strategy, positioning it not just as a content consumption app but as a full-fledged communication platform.
Why It Matters: TikTok Is Getting More Social
With these additions, TikTok is closing the messaging gap with competitors like Instagram, Snapchat, and WhatsApp, where voice messages and media sharing have long been core features.
- The move reflects how Gen Z and younger users are increasingly favoring voice notes over text for personal communication.
- TikTok sees this as an opportunity to keep users engaged on-platform longer by encouraging ongoing conversations, not just video shares.
“TikTok wants to be a place where users connect beyond just sending each other clips,” the company stated.
Privacy and Safety: Guardrails for Teens and First-Time Chats
TikTok is rolling out these features with a strong emphasis on safety, especially for its younger user base:
- No media in initial messages: First-time message requests cannot include photos or videos, unless the content is already on TikTok.
- Nudity detection: An automated system will block users from sending images containing nudity. The recipient will never see the image, and the sender will be restricted.
- Age restrictions:
- Users under 16 cannot access DMs.
- Users aged 16–17 will benefit from enhanced default protections.
- Adults 18+ can choose to toggle nudity filters in their settings.
Each time a user sends a photo or video, TikTok also issues privacy reminders, encouraging them to think twice before sharing.
A Broader Push Toward Messaging and Community
The update builds on TikTok’s recent investments in chat and creator interaction tools:
- Group chats for up to 32 participants launched last year.
- Creator Chat Rooms provide community spaces for followers to engage with creators directly.
Together with voice notes and media sharing, these features are part of a broader vision to foster real-time social interactions and creator-fan relationships.
