VSCO Expands Global Reach with New Camera App and Photography Education Push

With the worldwide launch of Capture and the acquisition of The Freelance Photographer, VSCO sharpens its focus on emerging creative professionals

VSCO’s Camera App Capture Now Available Globally

After a limited rollout in select countries last month, VSCO has officially launched its new iPhone camera app Capture worldwide. The app represents VSCO’s first new product in over a decade, signaling a renewed push into professional-grade tools for photographers.

Designed to complement VSCO’s popular editing platform, Capture provides manual control over key camera functions like shutter speed, ISO, and exposure, and supports high-fidelity formats like RAW and ProRAW. The app also offers over 50 real-time presets to help creators shoot in a defined aesthetic style from the start.

Photos captured in the app sync directly to a user’s VSCO cloud library, though they must still be uploaded via the main VSCO app — a decision aimed at keeping the creative workflow integrated and centralized.

Acquires The Freelance Photographer to Boost Creator Education

In tandem with the launch, VSCO also announced the acquisition of The Freelance Photographer, a platform offering a mix of photography courses, mentoring, and business development resources tailored to independent creators.

CEO Eric Wittman highlighted the alignment of the acquisition with VSCO’s broader mission to serve professional creatives:

“There’s a clear gap in the market for business education and industry-specific guidance… The Freelance Photographer offers the community and tools to help turn craft into career.”

Founded by Paul Weaver, The Freelance Photographer offers coaching plans starting at $208/month, with premium tiers ($625/month) offering access to 50+ tools, full course libraries, and one-on-one mentoring.

Building a Career-First Photography Ecosystem

The expansion into both hardware (through Capture) and professional education (via The Freelance Photographer) reflects VSCO’s recent strategic evolution:

  • VSCO Hub: A platform for brands to discover freelance photographers
  • VSCO Sites: Website builder for portfolios and online presence
  • VSCO Canvas: Collaborative tool for moodboarding and project planning

By stacking product launches with career-building tools, VSCO is clearly repositioning itself not just as an editing app, but as an end-to-end creative platform for modern photographers.

What It Means for the Creative Community

For photographers — especially those in the early stages of their career — VSCO’s updated offerings represent a more holistic toolset:

  • Creative capture tools with artistic presets
  • Cloud-syncing and editing workflows
  • Discovery, networking, and job-matching via VSCO Hub
  • Website building with VSCO Sites
  • Education and mentorship through The Freelance Photographer

With a more connected ecosystem, VSCO is making a compelling case for professionals to stay within its platform as they evolve their careers.
