WhatsApp to Introduce Logout Without Data Loss in Future Update

WhatsApp May Soon Let You Logout Without Losing Chats and Media

New feature spotted in beta could let users temporarily log out while keeping their data intact

WhatsApp Prepares Long-Awaited Logout Feature for Primary Devices

WhatsApp is testing a new logout option that may soon allow users to temporarily exit their accounts on primary devices—without losing their chats, media, or settings. This comes as part of a broader push to enhance account flexibility.

  • Currently, WhatsApp only allows logouts on linked devices like computers or tablets.
  • On the primary smartphone, users have to either uninstall the app or delete the account to stop using it.

Logout Options Spotted in Latest Beta

According to a leak by AssembleDebug (via Android Authority), the feature was discovered in WhatsApp beta version 2.25.17.37 for Android.

  • The new ‘Logout’ option appears under Settings > Account.
  • Users are given three choices:
    • Erase all data & preferences
    • Keep all data & preferences
    • Cancel
  • Selecting the second option allows users to log out without deleting chats or media, enabling them to log back in later and resume seamlessly.

A More Flexible Way to Take a Break

This feature could be particularly helpful for users who want to temporarily step away from WhatsApp without deleting their account or manually backing up data.

  • It removes the dependency on Google Drive backups or internal storage restores, making account switching and pausing usage more user-friendly.
  • All messages, files, and preferences remain intact when opting to keep data during logout.

Rollout Timeline Still Unknown

While the feature is currently in beta testing, there is no confirmed date for its official rollout.

  • WhatsApp is likely to release it to beta testers first before a wider public update.
  • If implemented, this change would mark a significant improvement in account management flexibility for users worldwide.
