WWDC 2026: Apple Tightens Rules on Low-Effort App Store Apps

Apple has updated its App Review Guidelines, warning developers that certain apps could be removed from the App Store if they are not regularly updated, improved or attracting customers.

The changes were released this week alongside WWDC 2026.

Under the revised rules, Apple said it may take action against apps in categories that are already well established on the App Store.

“We may remove these apps from the App Store going forward if they are not updated, improved, or do not attract customers,” the guidelines state.

Expanded list of crowded categories

Apple cautioned developers against “opportunistically creating variants of existing app categories or popular apps.”

The company said new submissions in these areas will need to provide a “meaningfully different or improved” experience.

Examples cited by Apple include:

  • Wallpaper apps.
  • Simple timer apps.
  • Sound effects apps.
  • Dating apps.
  • Flashlight apps.
  • Fortune-telling apps.

The previous version of the guidelines had specifically mentioned:

  • Fart apps.
  • Burp apps.
  • Drinking games.
  • Kama Sutra apps.

Stronger language

Apple described apps such as drinking games, Kama Sutra apps, and fart and burp apps as:

  • Low-quality.
  • Mediocre.
  • Low-effort.

The company warned that developers who repeatedly submit such apps could lose access to the Apple Developer Program.

Existing review process remains

Apple told TechCrunch that developers already receive warnings through its App Store Improvements process when apps become outdated or fail to attract downloads.

According to Apple, the process gives developers time to improve their software before removal becomes a possibility.

Push for better app discovery

The guideline changes come as Apple rolls out new discovery tools for the App Store.

At WWDC 2026, the company introduced:

  • Personalized app recommendations.
  • New merchandising tools for developers.

Apple said those features are designed to help developers grow their businesses and reconnect with existing users.

TL;DR

Apple has updated its App Store rules to say certain apps in crowded categories could be removed if they are not improved or fail to attract users. Developers will continue to receive warnings through the App Store Improvements process before any removal.
