OpenAI is preparing its biggest redesign of ChatGPT, aiming to turn the chatbot into a “superapp” with coding tools and AI agents as it seeks to boost revenue ahead of a possible stock market listing, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.
The newspaper, citing more than a dozen current and former employees, said the changes are part of a broader reorganisation as OpenAI shifts resources toward higher-paying business customers and steps up competition with rival Anthropic.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Codex set for a bigger role
According to the FT, OpenAI plans to give greater prominence to its coding product, Codex.
The changes are expected to begin rolling out in the coming weeks through updates to ChatGPT’s website and mobile apps.
The redesign is expected to include:
- New prompts and interface changes.
- Greater emphasis on coding tools.
- Expanded image-generation features.
- Links to partner services including Canva and Booking.com.
- Support for AI agents.
Enterprise business becoming more important
The report said most Codex users are paying customers.
It added that:
- Around 2 million businesses generate about 40% of OpenAI’s revenue.
- OpenAI expects that share to rise to 50% by the end of the year.
The company is increasingly focusing on enterprise clients, which are seen as a more lucrative source of growth.
User base continues to expand
OpenAI said earlier this year that ChatGPT had:
- More than 900 million weekly active users.
- More than 50 million consumer subscribers.
IPO plans remain uncertain
Reuters reported in May that OpenAI was preparing a confidential filing for a U.S. initial public offering in the coming weeks.
Chief Executive Sam Altman has said the company is not focused on timing and would go public when it makes sense.
TL;DR:
The Financial Times reported that OpenAI is preparing a major redesign of ChatGPT, with more emphasis on coding tools and AI agents. The move comes as the company targets business customers and weighs a future stock market listing.
