OpenAI on Tuesday introduced new capabilities for Codex, expanding the AI platform beyond software development and targeting a wider range of workplace tasks.
The company also released an internal report showing that Codex is increasingly being used by knowledge workers rather than just programmers.
According to OpenAI, Codex now has more than 5 million weekly active users, more than six times the level recorded when its desktop app launched in February.
Developers remain the largest group of users.
But knowledge workers now account for about 20% of users, and that segment is growing more than three times faster, the company said.
Six job-focused tools
OpenAI unveiled six plug-ins aimed at specific professions.
The tools are designed to work inside the Codex app and combine integrations, instructions and context tailored to particular roles.
The new plug-ins cover:
- Data analytics
- Creative production
- Sales
- Product design
- Equity investing
- Investment banking
OpenAI said the tools are intended to be useful immediately, while also allowing users to customize them over time.
New publishing feature
The company also introduced Sites, a feature that lets users turn Codex outputs into hosted interactive websites instead of standard local files.
OpenAI said it is working with several partners to support the feature, including:
- Wix
- Base44
- Replit
- Lovable
- Figma
- Emergent
The company said it plans to expand the partner network.
More detailed instructions
Another addition, called Annotations, allows users to highlight specific sections of documents or files.
That gives Codex more precise context and enables more targeted commands.
Enterprise push intensifies
The launch follows a broader effort by OpenAI to expand its enterprise business.
Three weeks ago, the company announced the OpenAI Deployment Company, a joint venture backed by more than $4 billion from global investment firms.
The initiative is intended to help businesses integrate OpenAI products into existing systems and workflows.
Competition in the area has been increasing.
Anthropic launched its enterprise agents program in February and introduced a set of finance-focused agents in May.
OpenAI began supporting plug-ins for Codex in March.
Focus on workplace adoption
OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser said companies are now looking beyond the capabilities of AI systems and focusing on how to incorporate them into daily operations.
“AI is becoming capable of doing increasingly meaningful work inside organizations,” Dresser said.
“The challenge now is helping companies integrate these systems into the infrastructure and workflows that power their businesses.”
TL;DR:
OpenAI has introduced six new Codex plug-ins for jobs ranging from sales to investment banking, along with website publishing and annotation features. The company said Codex has surpassed 5 million weekly users as it pushes deeper into the enterprise market.
