Google has lowered the monthly price of its AI Plus subscription plan in the United States to $4.99, intensifying competition among providers of consumer AI services.
The company also doubled the storage included with the plan, increasing it from 200GB to 400GB.
Vikas Kansal, product lead for Gemini AI subscriptions, said on X that the storage changes would be rolled out over the coming days.
Cheaper entry-level plan
Google AI Plus debuted in January as the company’s lowest-priced AI subscription tier in the U.S.
The service targets individual users and students rather than enterprise customers.
Features included in the plan are:
- Video generation through Omni Flash.
- Google’s Flow creative studio.
- NotebookLM, the company’s AI research assistant.
Customers seeking higher usage limits or additional capabilities can upgrade to:
- Google AI Pro.
- Google AI Ultra.
Price competition reaches the U.S.
The latest reduction highlights growing competition in AI subscriptions.
Chi-Hua Chien, co-founder and managing partner at Goodwater Capital, said the industry is entering what he describes as a period of commoditization.
“If you look at the web era, the infrastructure companies were Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, Northern Telecom, Lucent, Akamai, Equinix,” Chien told TechCrunch.
“A lot of those companies survived for a period of time but aren’t worth a lot today.”
He said users typically prioritize cost over the underlying technology.
“They’re just thinking, ‘How do I move my bits as cheaply as possible?'”
Pressure on AI providers
According to Chien, foundation model companies and other infrastructure providers may face increasing pressure over time.
“My prediction for a lot of these infrastructure companies — and when I say infrastructure, I mean an OpenAI or an Anthropic, or the backend components, energy, chips, hosting — there will be a period of time when these companies are valuable,” he said.
“But over time, you will see them get increasingly commoditized.”
The comments come as both OpenAI and Anthropic have confidentially filed for initial public offerings.
Emerging market strategy reaches America
Competition on pricing has been intensifying outside the United States for months.
In August 2025, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go in India for about $4.60 per month, well below the price of its standard $20 ChatGPT Plus subscription.
Google followed in December with its own AI Plus offering priced below $5 for Indian customers.
Monday’s announcement suggests that strategy has now been extended to the U.S. market.
According to the article, Anthropic has not yet introduced either localized pricing or a lower-cost subscription tier.
TL;DR
Google has cut the price of its AI Plus subscription to $4.99 and doubled included storage. The move intensifies competition among AI providers and highlights concerns that AI models could become increasingly commoditized.
