How MarqVision Is Using AI to Transform Brand Control and IP Protection

Born at Harvard Law, the startup combines computer vision and generative AI to help global brands fight counterfeiting, recover revenue, and control their digital presence

From Law School to AI Startup

When Mark Lee enrolled at Harvard Law School, he envisioned a conventional legal career. But one trademark class changed everything. Learning that counterfeiting is a $3 trillion global problem — accounting for roughly 8% of global commerce — Lee saw an opportunity to merge his interest in technology and intellectual property.

“I never thought I’d be an entrepreneur,” Lee said. “But when I saw how online marketplaces and social media were fueling the growth of counterfeits, I realized this was a global problem that could be solved with computer vision and AI.”

That insight became MarqVision, the AI-powered platform Lee co-founded in 2021 to help brands detect, remove, and recover from online counterfeiting and brand abuse.

$48M Series B to Scale AI and Go Global

Now, the LA-headquartered company has closed a $48 million Series B, bringing its total funding to $90 million.

  • Lead investor: Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital India & SEA)
  • Other backers: Salesforce Ventures, HSG (ex-Sequoia China), Coral Capital, and Michael Seibel of Y Combinator
  • Returning investors: YC, Altos Ventures, and Atinum Investment

Breakdown of the Funding:

  • 50%: Scale AI and engineering teams; integrate generative AI
  • $10M: Expand enterprise functionality to support large global brands
  • $10M: Drive regional expansion, especially into Japan, following presence in the U.S., Korea, China, and Europe

From Counterfeit Detection to Full Brand Control

MarqVision began by using AI-powered computer vision to find and flag counterfeit goods across e-commerce platforms. Over time, it evolved into a full-stack brand control platform, enabling brands to:

  • Remove infringing products
  • Track and recover lost sales
  • Monitor brand presence across social, marketplaces, websites, and chat platforms
  • Gain brand intelligence on pricing, supply chains, and reseller behavior

“We started with enforcement but moved toward helping brands recover revenue,” said Lee. “Many clients see a 5% sales lift after deploying MarqVision.”

Redefining AI-Powered Services

Lee argues that AI has transformed MarqVision from a “software company with humans in the loop” to a leader in AI-led services — a category previously considered too labor-intensive for scale.

  • With customers across fashion, gaming, pharma, luxury, electronics, and entertainment, the company now serves 350+ brands.
  • Revenue growth has doubled year-over-year:
    • $1M ARR in 8 months
    • $10M ARR in 3 years
    • $20M ARR by year four
  • Goal: $100M ARR by mid-2027

“Our ambition has expanded far beyond a $5B software company,” Lee said. “We’re building the infrastructure for IP and brand professionals globally.”

Why Investors Are Betting on MarqVision

Investors see the startup not just as a legal tool, but as part of a much larger transformation of IP protection, enabled by AI:

“AI is expanding the total addressable market from productivity to execution,” Lee explained. “We’re not just identifying infringements — we’re doing the work of removing them and recovering lost revenue.”

Peak XV, Salesforce Ventures, and HSG all noted the platform’s potential to scale like SaaS, but with service-level impact, aligning with the rise of AI-native managed services.

What’s Next: Brand Intelligence and Beyond

MarqVision’s roadmap includes expanding into:

  • Brand Intelligence: Insights into pricing strategy, unauthorized resellers, and gray market channels
  • Global legal compliance tools
  • Deep integrations with marketplaces and ad platforms to automate enforcement

“Our goal is to become the backbone of brand protection for every IP-owning company in the world,” Lee said.
