Meta Unveils Superintelligence Labs in Bold AI Restructuring Move

Meta Reshapes AI Strategy with Superintelligence Labs to Lead Post-Human Era

Zuckerberg’s bold AI restructuring signals Meta’s ambition to build systems surpassing human intelligence amid fierce industry competition.

Meta launches Superintelligence Labs for advanced AI development

Meta Platforms has restructured its AI division, forming a new high-impact unit called Meta Superintelligence Labs, aimed at developing artificial intelligence systems more capable than humans. CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the move as marking “the beginning of a new era for humanity,” reinforcing Meta’s ambition to dominate the next phase of AI evolution.

  • The announcement follows Meta’s intensified investments and acquisitions in AI throughout 2025.
  • This pivot aligns Meta with the broader tech race toward artificial general intelligence (AGI) and superintelligence, putting it in direct competition with OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.

Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman to lead new AI unit

Meta appointed Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, as its Chief AI Officer following a $14.3 billion investment in the company earlier this month.

  • Wang, praised by Zuckerberg as “the most impressive founder of his generation,” will oversee Meta’s superintelligence efforts.
  • Nat Friedman, ex-CEO of GitHub, will co-lead the division, focusing on AI product strategy and applied research.

This leadership shift reflects Meta’s strategy of recruiting visionaries with proven execution capability across both startup and enterprise landscapes.

Zuckerberg: Superintelligence is within reach

In an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg, Zuckerberg emphasized that the rapid acceleration of AI progress makes the development of superintelligence achievable within the foreseeable future.

  • Developing superintelligence is coming into sight,” he wrote.
  • He reaffirmed Meta’s commitment to leading this transformation through infrastructure, computing power, and global talent.

Zuckerberg has previously prioritized AI as Meta’s top strategic focus for 2025, allocating resources to custom chips, data centers, and AI-driven products across Meta’s platforms.

Meta strengthens AI talent with elite hires

To supercharge its new division, Meta has onboarded 11 leading AI researchers from top labs:

  • From DeepMind: Jack Rae and Pei Sun
  • From OpenAI: Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, Shengjia Zhao, and Hongyu Ren
  • From Anthropic: Joel Pobar, who previously spent over a decade at Meta

These hires bring cutting-edge expertise in language modeling, multimodal learning, and safe AGI development, further positioning Meta as a leading force in advanced AI research.

Meta eyes strategic acquisitions to accelerate AI agenda

In addition to organic talent expansion, Meta is actively exploring strategic acquisitions to build its AI arsenal:

  • It has held talks with Perplexity AI and Runway AI, both emerging leaders in generative AI applications.
  • Meta is also expected to acquire PlayAI, a startup specializing in AI-generated voice replication, signaling its push into synthetic media.

These moves reflect Meta’s broad vision to own the full AI stack, from chips and infrastructure to frontier models and real-world applications.
