BMW R 12 GS Teased Ahead of Global Unveil
The BMW R 12 GS has been teased on the brand’s global website, confirming its official reveal on March 27. This scrambler-style motorcycle shares its engine and core fundamentals with the R 12 nineT roadster while offering features suited for off-road riding.
BMW R 12 GS Global Unveil Details
- The official reveal will take place at 9:30 PM IST on March 27.
- It features minimal bodywork and an aggressive, off-road stance.
Design and Mechanical Highlights
BMW Motorrad’s chief, Markus Flasch, confirmed that the brand is developing an off-road scrambler motorcycle.
- The R 12 GS will be a raised version of the R 12 nineT, featuring 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, wrapped in knobby off-road tyres.
- It is expected to have longer suspension travel and higher ground clearance, making it more off-road capable.
- The design philosophy aligns more with the earlier HP2 Enduro rather than the GS 1300, offering a lightweight and rugged package.

Leaked Details and Expected Features
Earlier leaked images have provided insights into the motorcycle’s features.
- It will come with a single-sided swingarm and a shaft final drive, similar to the R 12 nineT.
- A more upswept exhaust and increased ground clearance make it more adaptable for off-road terrain.
- Its scrambler-focused design will include minimal bodywork, contributing to a lighter kerb weight.
Engine and Performance Specifications
At the core of the R 12 GS will be a 1,170cc, air/oil-cooled, boxer twin engine.
- It is expected to deliver 110hp and 115Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed gearbox.
- However, BMW might introduce a different state of tune to optimize performance for off-road capabilities.
With its purpose-built scrambler design, the BMW R 12 GS is set to offer a more hardcore off-road experience, much like how the Ducati Desert Sled differs from the Scrambler Icon.
