Pre-delivery Inspection (PDI) & Check List
When awaiting the arrival of your new car, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement. However, rushing through the process can lead to regrets. Many buyers face complications because they overlooked crucial checks. Here’s a guide to ensure you cover all bases before you drive off in your new car.
Before Registration:
Before your car is registered, it’s critical to inspect it thoroughly. Once it’s registered, there’s little recourse for any discrepancies.
- Manufacturing Date: Verify the car’s manufacturing month and year. This is especially important if purchasing in the early part of the year. Some brands have been known to sell older stock.
- Ask the dealer for the “Form 22” certificate to verify the engine/chassis numbers and the year/month of manufacture.
- Vehicle Usage: If the odometer is disconnected, the car may have been used as a test-drive vehicle.
- Repair & Damage Checks: Inspect the car for any visible body damage or repairs. Damage can occur during transit and is often noticeable.
- Tax Calculations: Verify the tax calculations on the invoice. Overcharging for taxes like RTO or octroi is a common scam. Only pay the exact amount due to authorities.
Preparations:
Preparing for the delivery day involves ensuring all details are in place.
- Confirm Delivery Date: Ensure the dealership is ready to deliver the car on the agreed date. If you have a specific time or day preference (for cultural reasons), inform the salesperson.
- Daylight Delivery: Accept the car in daylight to ensure you can see all aspects clearly. Avoid evening deliveries as the dealership staff may be rushing.
- Documentation: Bring necessary documents like forms, receipts, and any paperwork related to the car.
- Payments: If there are pending payments, carry relevant receipts, post-dated cheques, or cards.
- Bring a Companion: Having a friend or family member along helps with a second set of eyes for suggestions and feedback.
- Capture the Moment: Take a camera to document the special occasion.
- Music Ready: If your car includes a stereo, bring a CD or cassette for your first drive.
- Appreciation Gift: A small gift for the sales person is a nice gesture.
At the Showroom:
Your visit to the showroom should be pleasant and thorough.
- Be Polite: Treat the sales staff with courtesy. A respectful approach ensures you receive better service.
- Request a Demo: The salesperson should guide you through all the features of the car. Ask for a detailed demonstration to understand the vehicle’s operation.
- Visit the Service Department: Familiarize yourself with the service center facilities by meeting the service manager. This can be useful for future maintenance.
Final Inspection:
Before taking delivery, conduct one last thorough check.
- Vehicle Condition: Inspect the car for cleanliness and check for any damage such as scratches or dents that may have occurred after your initial inspection.
- Ensure the interior is spotless as well.
- Functionality of Accessories: Confirm all lights, electrical components, and accessories work properly.
- Spare Wheel & Tools: Ensure the spare wheel is new, and check that the essential tools like the jack and spanner are included. Verify the presence of the lug key if wheel locks are fitted.
- Other Essentials: Check for items like wipers, floor mats, the first-aid kit, and the hazard sign.
- Mileage: The car’s mileage should be under 100 km (or in the range for most brands). A high mileage can indicate prior usage.
- Fuel Level: Confirm there’s enough fuel to get you to the nearest petrol station.
- Tyre Pressure: Many showrooms over-inflate tyres. Check and adjust tyre pressure accordingly.
- Registration Numbers: Ensure the registration number on the R.C. Book matches the number plates on the car. This is a common oversight by dealerships.
Documentation:
Ensure all necessary documents are in order.
- Invoice: Verify that the chassis and engine numbers on the invoice match the actual numbers on the car.
- Sales Certificate: Check this document for any discrepancies.
- Payment Receipts: Ensure all payments made are accounted for.
- Registration Book/Temporary Certificate: Verify the correctness of your name and vehicle details.
- Insurance: Confirm the insurance policy is active and valid.
- PUC Certificate: Ensure the Pollution Under Control certificate is valid for a year.
- Owner’s Manual: Make sure the manual is included.
- Duplicate Keys: Verify that you receive both sets of keys.
- Warranty Document: The original warranty should have dealership stamps.
- Extended Warranty: If opted for, ensure the extended warranty is included.
- Third-party Warranty: Check for warranty details for items like the battery and tyres.
- Roadside Assistance: Ensure the contact details for roadside assistance are available.
- Dealership Contacts: Collect business cards for the dealership and service personnel.
Lastly, don’t forget to express your gratitude to the staff before leaving. Enjoy your new car!
