Electric Truck Fatigue? Stellantis Bets on Gas-Boosted Ram 1500 Instead

Stellantis cancels its battery-electric Ram 1500 REV in favor of a hybridized extended-range model, citing cooling demand for full-size EV trucks

A Shift in Strategy: From BEV to REEV

In a surprising reversal, Stellantis announced it is canceling the all-electric Ram 1500 REV pickup, citing waning demand for full-size battery-electric trucks in North America. Instead, the automaker will focus on a range-extended version — previously known as the Ramcharger, now rebranded as the Ram 1500 REV.

  • The original BEV (battery electric vehicle) Ram 1500 is no longer in development.
  • Stellantis will instead prioritize a REEV (range-extended electric vehicle) version with a gas generator to supplement its battery.
  • This vehicle is now slated for production in 2026.

Why Stellantis Changed Course

The decision reflects growing industry unease with full-size EV truck adoption.

  • Consumer demand for large electric trucks has softened due to high costs, charging infrastructure limitations, and range anxiety.
  • Stellantis said the move allows them to “reassess product strategy” and better meet the needs of buyers who still want electric capabilities — without the limitations of battery-only range.

“As demand for full-size battery-electric trucks slows… Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy,” the company said in a statement.

What the New Ram 1500 REV Actually Is

The new Ram 1500 REV — formerly called Ramcharger — is not a traditional hybrid, but rather a battery-powered truck with a gas-powered generator that extends its range.

  • It boasts an estimated range of 690 miles, far exceeding that of current electric trucks on the market.
  • It still offers EV driving for shorter distances but adds internal combustion support for longer hauls or heavy-duty use.
  • Stellantis says the vehicle will set new standards for towing capacity, payload, and versatility in the half-ton segment.

A History of Delays and Uncertainty

The now-canceled all-electric Ram 1500 made a splashy debut at CES 2023, boasting:

  • Futuristic tech
  • Optional third-row jump seats
  • Two oversized battery pack options

However, enthusiasm from Stellantis cooled over time:

  • Originally scheduled for 2024 production, the BEV launch was first delayed to 2025.
  • By late 2024, Stellantis pushed the project into 2026, amid internal doubts and shifting priorities.
  • Now, the all-electric variant is dead entirely, replaced by a more flexible range-extended alternative.

The Bigger Picture: A Recalibration of EV Ambitions

Stellantis had previously committed to launching 25 all-new battery-electric vehicles in the U.S. by 2030. The Ram 1500 BEV was a centerpiece of that plan.

This decision signals a rethinking of that EV roadmap, at least in the pickup truck segment, where consumer expectations clash with infrastructure limitations and cost realities.

What’s Next for Ram and Stellantis?

  • Ram 1500 REV (extended-range version) is still on track to enter production in 2026.
  • Stellantis will likely continue focusing BEV efforts on lighter vehicles, urban mobility, and international markets where EV demand remains stronger.
  • The company may position the Ram 1500 REV as a transitional solution for truck buyers hesitant to go full-electric.

Stellantis has scrapped its all-electric Ram 1500 pickup plans due to softening demand. Instead, it will focus on an extended-range version — the newly renamed Ram 1500 REV — which combines battery power with a gas generator to deliver up to 690 miles of range. Production is scheduled for 2026.
