India’s top carmaker expects 2 lakh Navaratri deliveries, sees growing demand for compact cars, and accelerates electric vehicle exports to Europe.
Record-Breaking Festive Momentum
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest automobile manufacturer by sales, is on track to achieve a milestone 2 lakh vehicle deliveries during the ongoing Navaratri festive period.
- Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer–Marketing & Sales, noted that 1.65 lakh vehicles were delivered in the first eight days alone, already surpassing previous festive records.
- “We are expecting to touch the magical two lakh figure,” Banerjee told CNBC-TV18.
This would mark a historic high for the company, which has never crossed the 1 lakh delivery mark during Navaratri in the past decade.
Retail Surge Backed by GST Reform and Pending Demand
Maruti Suzuki reported a 27.5% surge in retail sales for September, driven by:
- Deferred purchases from August due to the implementation of GST 2.0 reforms.
- A robust pipeline of 2.5 lakh pending bookings, indicating continued strong demand into October.
While the festive boost reflects genuine market appetite, part of the growth has come from buyers who postponed purchases earlier in the year.
Compact Cars See Rising Popularity
One significant trend is the shift in consumer preferences from entry-level models (like Alto and WagonR) to premium compact cars such as:
- Baleno
- Brezza
- Fronx
This transition is supported by attractive upgrade offers, allowing buyers to move up the value chain, enhancing both the driving experience and product mix.
Rural Market Outpaces Urban in September
Sales have been evenly balanced across geographies, but rural India contributed 51% of total volumes in September—a slight edge over urban centers.
This reflects:
- Improved rural incomes and sentiment during the festive season.
- Increased outreach and penetration of Maruti’s dealership network in non-urban markets.
EV Exports Gain Traction in Global Markets
Maruti Suzuki is also making significant progress on the electric vehicle (EV) export front:
- EV exports reached around 3,000 units in the last month, reflecting growing momentum.
- Shipments have expanded beyond traditional markets like Japan and the Middle East, entering European territories including Norway, Denmark, Belgium, and Switzerland.
- Overall, exports have grown by 50%, underlining Maruti’s strengthening global footprint.
This marks a clear step forward in the company’s EV strategy, even as its domestic EV lineup is still evolving.
Market Performance and Valuation
Maruti Suzuki continues to deliver strong financial returns for investors:
- Current market capitalisation: ₹4,98,856 crore
- Stock price (as of 9:37 am, NSE): ₹15,866
- One-year gain: 25%
The performance reflects investor confidence, backed by consistent sales, a strong rural-urban mix, and growing export potential.
