Not Just Discounts: How Community Buying Is Reshaping Consumer Power in India

With ₹21 crore in savings, JITO’s group purchase reflects the growing power of community buying in India

₹149 Crore Deal Showcases Buying Power

In a remarkable display of community-led negotiation, members of the Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) recently purchased 186 luxury vehicles worth ₹149.54 crore in a single coordinated deal. The cars, priced between ₹60 lakh and ₹1.34 crore, were bought across India, with a significant number of buyers hailing from Gujarat, particularly Ahmedabad.

₹21 Crore Saved Through Group Bargaining

What makes this initiative stand out is the massive ₹21.22 crore discount the community secured through collective bargaining. By engaging with dealers from 15 major brands, including Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and others, JITO managed to reduce costs significantly for its members.

“Community buying gives us power to bargain harder,”
said Himanshu Shah, Vice-Chairman of JITO Apex.
“Brands benefit from assured volumes and lower marketing costs, while members get savings.”

Community Buying Goes Mainstream

JITO’s success has led the organisation to launch a dedicated wing focused on community buying. The goal is to extend similar group deals into sectors like:

  • Electronics
  • Medicines
  • Jewellery

With over 65,000 members across India, JITO’s strategy underscores how organised demand can lead to better deals for consumers and volume benefits for brands.

Other Communities Join the Trend

Jains aren’t alone in leveraging collective purchasing. The Bharwad community in Gujarat recently used the same strategy—but for a different purpose: empowerment through entrepreneurship.

Through the Bharwad Yuva Sangathan Gujarat, the community pooled bookings for 121 JCB machines, securing average discounts of ₹3.3 lakh per unit and saving around ₹4 crore in total.

More significantly, they offered zero down payment plans to members without strong credit histories, using community guarantees based on PAN and Aadhaar verification.

“Our campaign helps youth start their own ventures,”
said Dilip Bharwad, President of the Sangathan.
“It’s about economic empowerment, not just savings.”

The Rise of Collective Consumer Power

These initiatives represent a growing trend in India where communities harness their collective influence to negotiate better terms across sectors—from luxury goods to industrial machinery. It marks a shift from individual consumption to organized demand, creating a win-win for buyers and sellers.

With success stories like JITO and the Bharwad Yuva Sangathan, community buying is poised to play a larger role in India’s consumer and SME ecosystems.

Jains in Gujarat bought 186 luxury cars worth ₹149 crore through JITO’s group-buying initiative, saving ₹21 crore in total. The trend of community buying is also gaining traction with other groups like the Bharwads, who secured discounts and financing support for JCB machines to empower young entrepreneurs.
