Tata Records Highest Ever EV Sales, Nexon becomes Top Selling SUV in India

Tata Motors, the homegrown electric car maker, saw its sales of electric vehicles grow 439 percent over the past year. The 2,000-unit sales milestone is a significant achievement.

In December 2021, Tata Motors sold more than 2,000 Nexon and Tigor electric vehicles, proving that electric vehicles are becoming more popular as more and more individuals switch to greener, cleaner alternatives. Tata Nexon, meanwhile, became the best-selling SUV of India in December 2021, surpassing some prominent names from Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.

Tata Motors, a homegrown electric car manufacturer, reported a 439 percent increase in sales of its electric vehicles last year. Last month, 2,255 units were sold, while 418 were sold in December 2020. Tata EVs have broken the 2,000-unit sales mark, which is an important accomplishment. Tata sold 1,751 electric cars in November 2021, which means that they grew by 29 percent in December.

Tata Motors continues to dominate the Indian electric car market even with only two electric models in its lineup – the Nexon EV and Tigor EV. The Nexon EV remains India’s most popular electric car. Tata will also launch a new electric version of its popular micro-SUV Punch as well as an electric version of its Altroz EV soon. Shailesh Chandra, President, PVBU, says that EV sales exceeded 10,000 units in FY22 and crossed 2,000 monthly sales for the first time in December 2021.

Tata plans to release an expanded version of the Nexon EV very soon, with a larger battery and, therefore, longer range. Tata Motors has established its own electric vehicle subsidiary, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, in order to grow its electric vehicle business in the Indian market. The company recently raised Rs. 7,500 crore for its EV subsidiary.

Tata Nexon posted a YoY growth of 88.7% with a total of 12,899 units sold in December 2021 as opposed to 6,835 units sold during the same period last year. Tata sold 35,299 units in December 2011 compared to 23,545 units during the same period last year, with a positive YoY growth of half, making it the second largest car seller in the country behind Hyundai.
