Set for a September launch, the new Model 3+ offers over 800 km of range, reshaping Tesla’s portfolio in China ahead of a competitive Q4.
A Strategic Upgrade to the Model 3 Lineup
Tesla is preparing to expand its Model 3 Highland refresh lineup in China with the introduction of a new trim: the Tesla Model 3+. Certified by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), this model is being positioned as Tesla’s longest-range vehicle available in China.
- The “+” designation signals an upgrade beyond current variants, particularly in range.
- It’s expected to debut as early as September 2025, timed to maximize year-end sales momentum.

What Makes the Model 3+ Different?
The Model 3+ is structurally similar to the existing Long Range AWD version but comes with a key mechanical change: it drops the front motor, relying solely on a 225 kW (301 hp) rear motor.
- This rear-wheel-drive setup reduces weight and energy consumption.
- Despite using the same LG ternary battery as the AWD version, it achieves over 800 km (498 miles) of range on a single charge (CLTC cycle).
- This exceeds the 753 km range of the dual-motor AWD Model 3 currently available.
Longest Range Tesla in China
Tesla’s highest-range model in China has so far been the imported Model S Plaid, offering 672 km under CLTC testing. The new Model 3+ overtakes it, at least on paper, with 800+ km of tested range.
- It becomes the range leader for Tesla in China, an important distinction in the highly competitive EV market.
- Tesla aims to differentiate it from the Performance and standard Highland trims while still maintaining affordability compared to premium imports.
Real-World Expectations and Range Translation
Although 800+ km sounds impressive, it’s crucial to note this is based on China’s CLTC test cycle, which tends to overestimate range compared to EPA standards.
- Real-world range may be closer to 530–580 km, especially under mixed driving conditions.
- In U.S. terms, this might put the Model 3+ roughly on par with a Long Range RWD variant Tesla previously offered in China—though with a larger battery and better efficiency.
Tesla’s Push for Q4 Dominance
The launch of the Model 3+, alongside the upcoming six-seat Model Y L, reflects Tesla’s broader strategy to revitalize sales in China’s critical end-of-year quarter.
- These launches are designed to broaden market appeal and fend off rising competition from domestic EV makers.
- By offering premium range without AWD complexity, Tesla targets range-conscious buyers who may not need dual-motor performance.
