The UAE is doing its bit to preserve Mother Nature and eco-friendly clearly seems to be the new mantra in the UAE. Recently, Emirates announced to go plastic-free by the end of the year and now, Carrefour, the giant retail chain in the UAE is doing its bit towards eliminating plastic usage. As an effort, two Carrefour stores in UAE will eliminate single-use plastic bags. We are mighty impressed! Meanwhile Carrefour recently launched re-usable shopping bags.
Carrefour At Cityland Mall & Arabian Ranches 1 Go Plastic-Free
In an effort to go green, Majid Al Futtaim has confirmed that two of Dubai’s Carrefour stores will eliminate single-use plastic bags at the checkout counters. Starting from 28 February, Carrefour Hypermarket at Cityland Mall and Carrefour Market at Arabian Ranches 1 will not be offering plastic bags to its customers. And that also means you must carry your own shopping bag when visiting.
Shoppers can also purchase recyclable paper bags for 40 fils each. Proceeds from the sale of these paper bags will be donated to the Emirates Nature-World Wildlife Fund to support UAE wildlife. In addition, customers can also purchase Carrefour’s range of reusable bags which are currently available in three versions- a woven plastic bag for AED 2.50, a canvas foldable bag for AED 9.50 and a heavy duty juco bag for AED 10.
Recently, Carrefour signed the national pact for eliminating plastic packaging by 2025 and is very well living up to its promise. According to reports, over eight to twelve million tonnes of plastic gets thrown into the ocean every year. Now, that definitely calls for immediate action, doesn’t it? And what better way than giant corporations like Carrefour taking the lead.
In fact, some of the Carrefour outlets have also replaced plastic bags with re-usable cloth bags in the vegetable and fruits section. Meanwhile, Spinney’s has also pledged to do its bit towards eliminating plastic usage. However, we are awaiting any further developments or changes on the same.
