India’s CrisprBits Gets Backing to Launch CRISPR-Based Tests in Africa, LATAM

With backing from Spectrum Impact and others, the Bengaluru-based biotech startup eyes global expansion and commercialisation of its molecular diagnostics platform

$3 Mn Pre-Series A Boost for CRISPR Innovation

CrisprBits, a Bengaluru-based biotech startup, has secured $3 Mn (INR 26.8 Cr) in a pre-Series A funding round led by Spectrum Impact, the family office of Aarti Industries CMD Rajendra Gogri.

  • The round also saw participation from the promoter family of HBL Engineering, C-CAMP, and existing backers like the Vijay Alreja Family Office and the founders themselves.
  • The funding will help commercialise the PathCrisp diagnostics platform, ramp up production capacity, and support international expansion.

What CrisprBits Is Building

Founded in 2020 by engineers from BITS Pilani, CrisprBits develops CRISPR-based diagnostics and gene editing platforms to solve challenges in human health, animal health, and food safety.

The company’s core platforms include:

  1. PathCrisp:
A molecular diagnostics solution offering high-impact tests for:
    • Sickle cell disease
    • Typhoid
    • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
    • Food and animal health diagnostics
  2. EdiCrisp:
A gene editing platform for precise therapeutic and research applications.
  3. CurieCrisp:
A disease modeling platform used in drug discovery and biomedical research.

CrisprBits is also developing a proprietary AI-augmented strain engineering platform to optimise biofuel production — a step toward sustainable industrial solutions.

Scaling Up for Global Markets

With the fresh capital, CrisprBits is now focused on commercial deployment and global expansion:

  • The startup aims to expand into Africa and Latin America within the next six months
  • It will invest in diagnostics manufacturing infrastructure to meet international demand
  • Part of the funding will be used to build the AI-augmented platform for sustainability and strain engineering

“This funding round provides the fuel for our mission… We are now positioned to scale our products and services beyond India,” said Vijay Chandru, founder of CrisprBits.

CRISPR Tech: A Growing Frontier in Indian Biotech

CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) technology allows scientists to edit genes and detect pathogens with high precision and speed. It is being widely adopted for:

  • Rapid diagnostics
  • Gene therapy
  • Biosustainability solutions

CrisprBits is among a rising cohort of Indian biotech startups leveraging CRISPR for real-world applications, with scalable, affordable, and high-precision tools.

Indian Biotech Ecosystem on the Rise

India’s biotech sector is undergoing explosive growth. According to junior science and technology minister Jitendra Singh, the number of biotech startups in India has jumped from 50 to nearly 11,000 in the past decade.

  • The Indian government aims to build a $300 Bn bioeconomy by 2030
  • Platforms like C-CAMP are playing a key role in nurturing biotech ventures through grants, labs, and mentorship

CrisprBits stands out by merging AI, precision biotech, and global diagnostics demand into a fast-scaling model for innovation and impact.
