IndiGo Confirms Order for 30 More Airbus A350s, Doubling Wide-Body Fleet Plans
India’s Largest Airline Strengthens Long-Haul Strategy with 60 A350 Aircraft on Order
IndiGo expands wide-body fleet with fresh A350 order
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has announced a firm order for 30 additional Airbus A350 wide-body aircraft, bringing its total A350 commitment to 60 planes. The announcement was made on Sunday during a media briefing in New Delhi.
- This follows a firm order placed in April 2023 for 30 A350s, with options to acquire 70 more.
- With the latest decision, IndiGo has converted 30 of those options into a confirmed deal with Airbus.
Fleet expansion and global ambitions
The airline is aggressively expanding its long-haul international footprint, signaling a major shift from its traditionally narrow-body, low-cost model.
- IndiGo now has over 900 aircraft on order, a mix of narrow-body and wide-body jets.
- The A350s are expected to support ultra-long-haul international routes, positioning the airline for future global competition.
Interim wide-body operations with leased 787s
In the current fiscal year (ending March 2026), IndiGo plans to launch flights to 10 new international cities using leased Boeing 787 aircraft.
- These leased jets will serve as a transitional fleet until the A350s are delivered and operational.
- This marks IndiGo’s first major step into premium, wide-body air travel, diversifying its network and service offerings.
A long-term vision for international growth
With this move, IndiGo is solidifying its long-term strategy to become a key player in international aviation, especially on long-haul and intercontinental routes.
CEO Pieter Elbers highlighted that the airline is committed to building a robust international network, underpinned by modern, fuel-efficient aircraft like the Airbus A350.
