Meet Dot: DoorDash’s In-House Delivery Robot
DoorDash has officially introduced Dot, a small, autonomous delivery robot designed to handle food and package deliveries across roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes at speeds up to 20 mph. Painted in bright red, equipped with LED eyes and a mouth-like cargo door, Dot is engineered to be visually engaging—if not a bit uncanny.
- Dot can carry up to 30 pounds of goods or six pizza boxes.
- It features interchangeable inserts like cupholders and coolers for varied delivery needs.

Testing Kicks Off in Phoenix

Tech Stack: A Real-Time AI Brain
Dot uses a robust sensor suite for navigation:
- 8 cameras, 4 radar, and 3 lidar sensors
- Combined with real-time AI that blends deep learning and search-based algorithms to determine optimal delivery paths.
- Cameras are also installed inside the cargo area, partly as a safety measure.
While Dot cannot be teleoperated, it’s trained to stop and pull over when it encounters an obstacle. If it gets stuck, field operators will be dispatched to assist.
Safety and Urban Etiquette
Safety remains a key concern as Dot moves through public spaces.
- It is programmed to be deferential to pedestrians and cyclists, while large enough to be visible to drivers.
- The robot is light enough to be tipped over, but DoorDash field teams can respond to upright or rescue a Dot.
- A microphone and speaker system could eventually support AI-powered conversations with customers.
Human Couriers Still Key
DoorDash is positioning Dot as a complement, not replacement for human delivery workers.
- The company says most deliveries will still be done by people.

However, this framing may not ease concerns from labor advocates, especially as the company scales Dot beyond Phoenix.
Public Sentiment: Cute or Creepy?
Like robotaxis, delivery robots risk becoming symbols of automation anxiety.
- Waymo vehicles have faced vandalism, and it’s easy to imagine Dots becoming targets as well.
- DoorDash is working with lawmakers and regulators, and early feedback has been positive, especially around traffic reduction.
