Ola Introduces INR 2,010 Monthly Subscription for Zero Commission Model
Ola has unveiled a zero-commission model for its driver partners, allowing them to retain 100% of their earnings by subscribing to a 30-day pass priced at INR 67 per day, translating to INR 2,010 per month.
Key Features of the Zero-Commission Model
- The model is available to drivers operating autos, bikes, and cabs across India.
- This zero-commission structure is a significant shift from the company’s previous model, where Ola took a commission on each ride.
- Ola emphasized that this move aims to provide drivers with greater ownership over their earnings, positioning them as the backbone of the mobility ecosystem.
An Ola spokesperson stated, “This fundamental shift in the ride-hailing business empowers our driver partners, creating a more resilient and sustainable network.”
Background: Driver Protests and Competition
This development comes after driver protests in Chennai in February, where drivers expressed dissatisfaction over high commissions charged by Ola and its rival Uber. In response, Uber rolled out a zero-commission model for auto drivers across India.
Other ride-hailing platforms like Rapido and Namma Yatri have already adopted similar commission-free structures, prompting Ola to follow suit in a bid to address driver dissatisfaction and remain competitive.
Ola’s Evolution and Challenges
Founded in 2010 by Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati, Ola initially focused on taxi aggregation before branching out into financial services (Ola Financial Services), vehicle leasing (Ola Fleet), and cloud kitchens (Ola Foods).
- In 2024, Ola rebranded as Ola Consumer to reflect its diversification beyond ride-hailing services, including ventures like Ola Credit and a 10-minute food delivery service.
- Despite these innovations, updates on Ola’s newer offerings have been limited, and the company has been preparing for an IPO.
Financial Snapshot
On the financial front, Ola Consumer’s parent company, ANI Technologies, reported a 57.46% reduction in net loss to INR 328.5 Cr in FY24, down from INR 772.2 Cr in FY23. However, its operating revenue saw a slight dip of 5.48%, from INR 2,128.5 Cr in FY23 to INR 2,011.9 Cr in FY24.
