Once Without a Telephone, Sundar Pichai Now Earns ₹46 Crore a Week

From No Running Water to Rs 74 Lakh per Hour: The Inspiring Journey of Sundar Pichai

Alphabet CEO’s rise from modest beginnings in Chennai to one of the highest-paid executives in the world

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, is now a global tech icon and one of the highest-paid executives in the world. But few know the extent of his humble beginnings in Madras (now Chennai)—a life once devoid of running water or a home telephone.

Humble beginnings and life-changing moments

In a recent podcast interview with Lex Fridman, Pichai opened up about his early life and the hardships he faced.

  • He recalled growing up during a massive drought, where his family had no access to running water.
  • “They would bring water in trucks—maybe eight buckets per household,” he said.
  • Pichai would stand in line for hours with his mother and brother just to collect water for daily use.

He also shared how his family had to wait five years to get a rotary telephone.

  • “When we finally got one, it changed everything. People would visit our home just to make calls,” Pichai added.
  • These early challenges laid the foundation for his resilience, ambition, and love for technology.

A meteoric rise to tech leadership

After completing his early education in Chennai, Pichai went on to earn:

  • A degree in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur
  • A Master’s from Stanford University
  • An MBA from the Wharton School

He joined Google in 2004, eventually rising through the ranks to become CEO in 2015, and later took over as CEO of Alphabet in 2019.

Eye-popping earnings as Alphabet CEO

According to reports:

  • Sundar Pichai earns approximately Rs 5–6 crore per day
  • His annual salary totals Rs 1,663 crore
  • That breaks down to Rs 46.4 crore per week and Rs 74 lakh per hour

These figures position him among the top-paid tech executives globally, a stark contrast to his modest upbringing.

Pichai’s story is a powerful reminder that background does not define destiny. From standing in water lines in Chennai to leading a trillion-dollar tech empire, his life is a testament to how perseverance, education, and vision can change everything.
