Rainmatter Backs Naxatra Labs Again in India’s EV Hardware Push

Backed by Rainmatter and top founders, Naxatra Labs aims to scale EV motor production to 50K units/month and deepen R&D.

Naxatra Labs Fuels Its EV Motor Ambitions with $3M Pre-Series A

Naxatra Labs, a cleantech startup building high-efficiency electric motors, has raised $3 Mn (INR 26.86 Cr) in a Pre-Series A round led by Zerodha’s Rainmatter. The round also saw participation from high-profile angel investors like Vijay Shekhar Sharma (Paytm), Aloke Bajpai (ixigo), and Narayan GV (Ather Energy).

The funding will help the company expand R&D, develop new motor product lines, and ramp up production to 50,000 units per month, according to cofounder Abhilash Maurya.

“This round will accelerate the development of new product lines and enable us to increase our production capacity significantly,” said Maurya.

How does a young Indian deeptech startup go from lab to large-scale production in just 4 years? Naxatra may have cracked the blueprint.

Made-in-India Motors That Outperform the Market

Founded in 2021 by Abhilash Maurya, Gajendra Jain, Piyush Verma, and Arnav Biswas, Naxatra Labs focuses on designing and manufacturing axial and radial flux motors for electric vehicles and industrial uses.

  • Its lightweight motor tech claims 10% efficiency gains and 20% less weight than current market options.
  • The startup’s offerings include controllers and motors for two-wheelers like bikes, scooters, and mopeds.

By developing IP-rich motor designs in India, Naxatra joins a small but growing list of domestic hardware innovators addressing EV sector pain points like range, efficiency, and thermal performance.

Can homegrown motor innovation finally tip the scales in favor of India’s EV OEMs?

Rainmatter Doubles Down on Deeptech and Climate Impact

This marks Rainmatter’s second investment in Naxatra Labs—having earlier participated in its seed round in December 2024. The VC arm of Zerodha is increasingly aligning with deeptech climatetech bets, recently committing $200 Mn in funding and grants toward climate-first ventures.

“Naxatra fits our vision perfectly—building electromagnetic devices designed and manufactured in India,” said Vishvesh Krishna, investment analyst at Rainmatter.

  • Rainmatter also backed climate-monitoring startup Aurassure earlier this year.
  • This investment comes amid a surge in climatetech funding, with $46 Bn globally and $2.2 Bn in India deployed by August 2025—a 340% spike from 2022.

India now counts over 800 active climatetech ventures, spanning energy storage, renewables, circular economy, and climate-smart agriculture.

Is India’s hardware renaissance being powered by the climate crisis? Investors seem to think so.

Naxatra Labs raised $3M in Pre-Series A led by Rainmatter to expand EV motor production and R&D. The startup aims to scale to 50K motors/month, leveraging axial and radial flux tech. Backed by top founders, it’s part of a booming climatetech wave that saw $2.2B in India alone in the last 18 months.
