Amogy’s Vision: Ammonia as a Clean Power Source

Brooklyn-based climate tech startup Amogy has raised $80 million in a new funding round to scale its ammonia-to-power technology, a solution that could help fully eliminate fossil fuels from industries like shipping and power generation. This latest capital injection pushes Amogy’s valuation to $700 million, according to CEO and co-founder Seonghoon Woo.

  • The $23 million extension round was led by Korea Development Bank and KDB Silicon Valley LLC.
  • Additional investors included BonAngels Venture Partners, JB Investment, and Pathway Investment.

Why Ammonia? A Practical Hydrogen Carrier

Ammonia is commonly used in fertilizer, but Amogy leverages it as a hydrogen carrier, solving a critical transportation challenge.

  • Hydrogen is flammable and difficult to store or move, but binding it in ammonia form makes it safer and more practical.
  • In Amogy’s system, hydrogen is extracted (or “cracked”) from ammonia, then routed to a fuel cell that generates clean electricity.

Unlike combustion-based methods, Amogy’s process emits no NOx, a harmful pollutant linked to smog and respiratory issues.

Global Market Fit: Focus on Japan and South Korea

While headquartered in the U.S., Amogy is strategically targeting Asian energy markets, particularly Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, where renewable energy resources are limited.

  • These nations face challenges with solar, wind, and nuclear energy deployment.
  • Amogy’s system allows them to repurpose existing fossil fuel infrastructure without relying on combustion.

“They’re not in the best position to build nuclear or deploy solar at scale,” said Woo. “That’s where ammonia becomes key.”

Ammonia’s Rising Role in Power and Shipping

Asian countries are already exploring ammonia’s role in reducing carbon emissions.

  • Coal-fired plants are blending ammonia with coal to lower emissions.
  • Shipping lines are beginning to swap diesel for ammonia, especially in light of the International Maritime Organization’s 2027 carbon tax on maritime fuels.

However, current methods still require fossil fuels to combust ammonia, limiting their carbon reduction potential.

Amogy’s Breakthrough: Fossil-Free Ammonia Power

Amogy’s innovation lies in eliminating combustion altogether. By converting ammonia into pure hydrogen and nitrogen, its technology can power:

  • Ships, with commercial-scale deployments expected in the coming years.
  • Terrestrial applications, including data centers, which are increasingly seeking sustainable power sources.

Initial power units will produce 500 kW to 1 MW, with scalability through parallel installations.

Infrastructure and Supply Chain Considerations

Both Japan and South Korea are building up ammonia supply chains, sourcing the compound from the U.S. and the Middle East, where it’s produced using natural gas.

  • These imports will initially carry carbon footprints, but both countries are setting strict emissions standards for imported ammonia.
  • Producers will likely need to capture CO₂ or transition to green hydrogen sources to remain competitive.

“They see ammonia as the next LNG — but without the carbon,” Woo noted, emphasizing its potential as a clean global fuel.
