WhatsApp Adds Ads and Subscriptions to Updates Tab in Major Revenue Push

WhatsApp Introduces Ads in ‘Updates’ Tab, Opens New Revenue Stream

Meta-Owned Platform Brings Commercial Content to Status, Channels Without Touching Private Chats

WhatsApp, the messaging giant owned by Meta, has officially introduced advertisements for the first time on its platform, marking a pivotal shift in its monetisation strategy. The move is aimed at tapping into the platform’s massive daily active user base while preserving the privacy of personal messaging.

Ads to Appear in Updates Tab Only

According to WhatsApp’s announcement, ads will now be visible in the ‘Updates’ tab, which hosts Status updates and Channels.

  • These ads will appear between stories, similar to Instagram and Facebook.
  • Importantly, WhatsApp clarified that ads will not interfere with users’ personal chats, maintaining the app’s privacy-first appeal.

Channels to Offer Subscriptions and Promotions

In addition to ads, channel administrators can now promote their content to gain visibility, and users will have the option to subscribe to exclusive channel updates for a monthly fee.

  • These initiatives aim to enhance engagement and enable new revenue models for creators and businesses.

Hyperlocal Targeting and Meta Account Integration

Ads will be targeted based on a user’s city, language, or followed channels, leveraging Meta’s broader advertising infrastructure.

  • For users with linked Meta accounts, WhatsApp will also pull in ad preferences and relevant data to serve contextual and localised ads.

WhatsApp’s head of product Alice Newton-Rex confirmed that the rollout will be gradual over several months, ensuring users have time to read and accept new terms. “We’re not going to hurry people,” she said.

Strategic Expansion Amid Growing Business Use

Until now, businesses primarily used the Click to WhatsApp feature from Instagram to engage customers.

  • Meta’s India head, Sandhya Devanathan, had earlier emphasized how this feature helped complete sales cycles seamlessly between platforms.

India remains one of WhatsApp’s largest markets, and the platform sees over 1.5 billion daily visits to the Updates tab, providing a strong base for advertisers and creators.

Leadership Moves to Strengthen Business

The ad rollout follows Meta’s recent appointment of Arun Srinivas as India Managing Director, who will lead growth and innovation efforts across its platforms.

  • This comes days after Shivnath Thukral, Meta India’s public policy chief, stepped down.

The strategic introduction of advertising to WhatsApp reflects Meta’s broader effort to diversify revenue streams and tap into its untapped commercial potential in emerging markets like India.
