With Tempo, Stripe aims to reinvent high-volume stablecoin payments—bringing on a powerhouse lineup of partners from OpenAI to Visa
Stripe Bets Big on Stablecoins With New Blockchain Venture ‘Tempo’
Stripe is launching a new blockchain company called Tempo, focused on high-volume stablecoin transactions—a clear move to redefine how businesses handle global digital payments.
The most surprising part? Stripe has assembled an A-list consortium of early partners and investors, including:
- OpenAI
- Anthropic
- Visa
- Shopify
- Revolut
- Deutsche Bank
- Coupang
- Mercury
- DoorDash
- Nubank
- Lead Bank
- Standard Chartered
These companies are signed on as design partners, meaning they’re expected to pilot or adopt the blockchain once it’s operational.
What Is Tempo?
Tempo is being designed as a next-generation blockchain platform that focuses on stablecoin settlement—which could power anything from international remittances to automated agentic payments (e.g., autonomous software agents making purchases or handling subscriptions).
- Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies pegged to fiat currencies (like USD), making them more stable and practical for payments compared to volatile tokens like Bitcoin or Ether.
- The aim is to enable fast, cheap, and reliable stablecoin transactions at the scale that global businesses require.
Who’s Leading It?
- Matt Huang, co-founder of crypto VC heavyweight Paradigm and a Stripe board member, is taking the helm as CEO of Tempo.
- Paradigm, one of the biggest names in crypto venture capital, is also an early investor in the project.
Importantly, Stripe says Tempo will operate as an independent company, despite Stripe’s early funding and deep involvement.
Why Now?
Stripe’s interest in blockchain isn’t new. The company:
- Previously supported Bitcoin payments before pulling back in 2018.
- More recently re-entered crypto with support for USDC stablecoin payments on Solana, Ethereum, and Polygon.
- Acquired Bridge, a stablecoin company, to deepen its capabilities.
The global demand for fast, low-fee international payments—especially for digital platforms and developers—is rising. Stablecoins are proving to be an efficient solution for:
- Remittances
- Marketplace payouts
- Subscription billing
- AI agent-based transactions
Stripe, with Tempo, is now trying to own the rails for that next phase of payments.
A Foundational Blockchain for the AI Economy?
The inclusion of OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI-centric companies is telling.
As AI agents become more autonomous, they’ll need to interact with money programmatically—for example, an AI assistant booking a flight or subscribing to a SaaS tool.
Tempo could become the underlying infrastructure for these agentic economies, where software needs stable, programmable, and secure payment rails.
What This Means for the Industry
Stripe’s Tempo is launching into a crowded blockchain market, but with a few unique advantages:
- Stablecoin-first: Unlike general-purpose blockchains like Ethereum or Solana, Tempo is tailored for predictable, stable transactions.
- Enterprise backing: The caliber of its partners (Visa, OpenAI, Shopify, Deutsche Bank) signals real-world demand.
- Deep payments DNA: Stripe brings nearly 15 years of experience in global payment infrastructure.
If Tempo works as planned, it could become a de facto standard for stablecoin-based transactions in the AI and enterprise sectors.
