GRSE to Build Greenfield Facility as Shipbuilding Demand Surges

GRSE Plans Greenfield Shipbuilding Facility to Expand Capacity Beyond Kolkata

Defence shipbuilder targets rising domestic and global demand with strategic infrastructure expansion

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), one of India’s premier defence public sector undertakings, is preparing to take a bold step toward meeting rising shipbuilding demand. The Kolkata-based company is planning a greenfield shipbuilding plant outside the city, as it scales up capacity to serve the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, commercial clients, and export partners.

Surge in Demand Drives Expansion Strategy

GRSE’s expansion is driven by growing requirements in India’s maritime sector, spurred by the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and rising global interest in Indian-built ships.

  • The company has increased its concurrent shipbuilding capacity from 20 to 24 vessels in 2024
  • It aims to reach 28 ships by the end of 2025, using a hybrid approach of reviving defunct facilities and leasing dry docks

A Strategic Shift Beyond Kolkata

Despite these efforts, GRSE recognizes the geographical and infrastructural constraints of its current Kolkata base.

  • “Even with expansion within Kolkata, we won’t meet the next decade’s demand,” said Commodore P R Hari, CMD of GRSE
  • The company is evaluating potential locations on both the east and west coasts of India for the new facility
  • A final decision on the greenfield site is expected within six months

Dual Strategy for Immediate Growth

To meet short- and medium-term goals, GRSE is executing a two-pronged capacity enhancement plan:

  1. Revival of Dormant Infrastructure
    • Underused assets in Kolkata will be reactivated, boosting output without major new investments
  2. Leasing Additional Dry Docks
    • Long-term dry dock leases from external agencies will allow GRSE to scale up its build and repair capacity quickly

Vision for a Future-Ready Shipyard

The proposed greenfield shipyard will be a state-of-the-art facility, built to accommodate:

  • Next-generation warships
  • Advanced commercial vessels
  • Export-grade projects aligned with India’s growing defence export goals

This move marks a strategic pivot in GRSE’s growth trajectory, ensuring it remains at the forefront of India’s maritime capability development. With strong domestic demand and expanding export potential, GRSE’s future facility could play a pivotal role in projecting India’s shipbuilding expertise on the global stage.
