India Unveils Pinaka Mk-III: Next-Gen Rocket System to Redefine Artillery Power
BDL, L&T Defence, and DRDO Collaborate to Deliver 120 km-Range Precision Strike Capability Under Aatmanirbhar Bharat
In a major leap for India’s indigenous defence production, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and L&T Defence have partnered with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop the Pinaka Mk-III, the latest variant of the country’s multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) system. Aimed at significantly enhancing the Indian Army’s long-range strike capabilities, the project reinforces the vision of a self-reliant India under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Advanced Artillery for a New Era
Developed by DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune, the Pinaka Mk-III marks a generational upgrade over its predecessors.
- Range: Extended to 120 km, nearly double that of the Mk-II
- Caliber: Upgraded to 300 mm, accommodating high-energy propellants and advanced guidance
- Firepower: Retains the signature 12-rocket salvo in under 44 seconds
Each Pinaka regiment, consisting of 18 launchers, can saturate a 1,000 x 800-meter target zone, offering formidable area denial and strike capability.
Precision-Guided and Mission-Adaptable
The Mk-III integrates modern navigation systems to improve strike accuracy.
- Features include GPS and inertial guidance, delivering a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of less than 10 meters
- Warhead compatibility includes high-explosive, incendiary, and anti-tank submunitions
- Incorporates throttleable propulsion for in-flight maneuverability and evasion from enemy air defence systems
These capabilities position the Mk-III as a cost-effective tactical missile alternative, optimized for rapid deployment and deep-strike operations.
Development Timeline and Trials
DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat confirmed in June 2025 that the Pinaka Mk-III has entered its final development stage.
- Developmental trials began in 2024
- First live test with a 300 mm rocket is scheduled for October 2025
- User trials are slated to commence by late 2025
The collaboration is valued at over ₹25,000 crore, highlighting the strategic and industrial scale of the program.
Modernization and Future Plans
India’s long-term artillery roadmap includes induction of 22 Pinaka regiments by 2030, with the Mk-III replacing legacy systems like the Russian Grad and Smerch.
- The upcoming Pinaka Mk-IV, with an expected 300 km range, is set for deployment by 2030
- Seamless integration with ACCS, Firefinder, and Swathi radars ensures real-time targeting and interoperability with platforms like the K9 Vajra howitzer
Strategic Relevance and Export Potential
The Pinaka Mk-III is tailored for high-altitude warfare and contested border zones along China and Pakistan, offering strategic reach into hostile territory.
- Its precision and range afford commanders operational flexibility in complex terrain
- International interest from France and successful exports to Armenia bolster India’s position as an emerging global defence supplier
- India now produces over 5,000 Pinaka rockets annually, ensuring logistical autonomy in prolonged conflicts
With the Pinaka Mk-III, India is not only reinforcing its defence capabilities but also asserting its place on the global stage as a technology-driven and export-ready military power.
