AW109 TrekkerM Emerges as a Viable Alternative to Kamov Ka-226T
Following the Indian government’s decision to lift the 2021 ban on Leonardo, the Italian defense and aerospace firm has swiftly pivoted to promote its AW109 TrekkerM light utility helicopter to the Indian Army. The move comes as the $1 billion deal with Russia for 200 Ka-226T helicopters remains stalled due to indigenization concerns and geopolitical risks.
- The AW109 TrekkerM, a 3-tonne, twin-engine, multi-role platform, is positioned to replace India’s aging Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, which have served since the 1960s.
- Leonardo is now pitching the aircraft as a high-performance, ready-to-deploy solution tailored for mountain warfare and multirole missions.
Kamov Deal in Limbo Amid Localization and Sanctions Hurdles
Originally signed under a 2015 Inter-Governmental Agreement, the Ka-226T project aimed to build 140 helicopters in India via HAL after importing 60 units. However, it has faltered due to:
- Russia’s proposal of just 62.4% indigenous content in later stages—well short of India’s 70% Make in India requirement,
- The use of French Safran engines, raising CAATSA-related concerns due to U.S. sanctions,
- And the lack of progress or political support during recent India-Russia engagements.
As a result, defense analysts suggest the deal may be quietly abandoned, creating a vacuum in India’s light helicopter acquisition plans.
AW109 TrekkerM: High-Altitude Capable and Mission-Ready
Leonardo’s AW109 TrekkerM offers several performance and operational advantages:
- Hot-and-High Capability: Powered by twin Pratt & Whitney PW207C engines, it boasts a service ceiling of 6,000 meters and a top speed of 285 km/h, ideal for missions in Siachen and Eastern Ladakh.
- Advanced Cockpit Systems: Features like Synthetic Vision System (SVS), HTAWS, and multi-function displays (MFDs) increase situational awareness and mission safety.
- Modular Mission Payloads: Configurable for troop transport (up to 6 personnel), MEDEVAC, SAR, and armed roles with machine guns or missile pods.
- Rugged Skid Gear: Its compact size and skid landing gear enable landings in tight mountainous terrain.
- Optional Systems: Compatible with DAS, EO/IR sensors, rescue hoists, and cargo hooks for maritime and tactical operations.
Complementary to Indigenous LUH, Not a Competitor
Sources close to the matter confirm that Leonardo is positioning the AW109 TrekkerM as a complementary solution to HAL’s single-engine Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), not a replacement. The twin-engine design offers:
- Increased redundancy and safety in extreme conditions,
- Greater payload and range, suited for frontline military logistics and support.
Local Production Plan Underway
Leonardo has proposed a local manufacturing model with Indian private sector partners, aiming to exceed 50% localization through phased production.
- This model would not only align with the Ministry of Defence’s indigenization goals but could also fast-track deliveries compared to the stalled Ka-226T.
