IndiaAI GPU Subsidy: Over 4,400 Units Allocated, But Support Varies by User Type

IndiaAI Allocates ₹111 Crore in GPU Subsidies; Sarvam AI Receives ₹99 Crore for Foundational Model

Mission accelerates AI computing with 4,423 GPUs distributed; startups, researchers, and govt entities among beneficiaries

₹111 Crore Disbursed Under IndiaAI GPU Subsidy Scheme

The IndiaAI Mission, launched to bolster India’s AI infrastructure, has disbursed over ₹111.85 crore in GPU subsidies, aimed at making high-performance computing accessible to Indian startups, academic researchers, and public institutions.

  • A total of 4,423 GPUs have been allocated so far under this scheme, with substantial differences in support levels depending on applicant type, project scale, and GPU model.
  • The program follows the Union Cabinet’s approval in March 2024, reflecting the government’s commitment to develop sovereign AI capacity.

Sarvam AI Gets India’s Largest GPU Subsidy

Leading the allocation chart is Sarvam AI, selected earlier to build India’s foundational AI model.

  • Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar received 4,096 NVIDIA H100 SXM GPUs via Yotta Data Services, totaling a project cost of ₹246.71 crore.
  • The government subsidised ₹98.68 crore, marking the largest single subsidy under IndiaAI to date.

More Startups Join Foundational Model Development

Following Sarvam, three additional startups—Socket.Ai, Gan.AI, and Gnani—have been chosen by MeitY to build sovereign foundational models.

  • With these selections, GPU allocations and subsidy volumes are expected to rise, expanding India’s indigenous AI capabilities.
  • These startups will benefit from the empanelled GPU vendors, helping them access market-disruptive pricing for cutting-edge hardware.

Uneven Support Across Users

The IndiaAI subsidy scheme, while inclusive, shows sharp variance in support based on user profile:

  • Early-stage researcher Shilpa Singh received an A100 40GB GPU with a total cost of just ₹284, but earned a subsidy of ₹113.60.
  • In contrast, startup founder Manisha Singhal, allocated an H100 SXM GPU at ₹341.20, received no subsidy—highlighting inconsistencies in disbursement based on eligibility criteria.

Government Institutions Among Top Beneficiaries

Apart from startups, government-backed users also received significant allocations:

  • Shreevyas H M, through NxtGen Datacenter, received over ₹11 crore in subsidies, across multiple GPU types like H100 NVL and H200 SXM.
  • One of his projects alone cost over ₹1.06 crore for a 12-GPU cluster, showcasing the scale of institutional adoption.

Role of GPU Service Providers

Private service providers such as E2E Networks Ltd, NxtGen Datacenter, and Yotta Data Services have emerged as critical distribution partners under the scheme.

  • E2E Networks, in particular, has enabled access to high-end GPUs like H100, L40S, and A100 at below-market prices, serving a wide cross-section of Indian AI developers.

A Strategic Push Toward AI Sovereignty

The IndiaAI Mission’s GPU allocation strategy is central to building indigenous AI capability, especially in foundational model development and advanced research.

  • By offering differential subsidies based on project scope and applicant category, the mission aims to strike a balance between accessibility and strategic national objectives.
  • As newer rounds of funding are expected, transparency in allocation criteria and scalable support structures will be key to maximizing the impact.
