Amid global uncertainty, the Finance Minister highlights India’s domestic resilience, evolving leverage, and role as a stabilising force at Kautilya Economic Conclave 2025.
India Positioned Strongly Amid Global Economic Shifts
At the Kautilya Economic Conclave 2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underscored that the global economy is not facing a temporary disruption, but a structural transformation—marked by geopolitical tensions, energy realignments, and trade imbalances.
- “Sanctions, tariffs, and decoupling strategies are reshaping global supply chains,” she noted.
- The world is witnessing intensifying conflicts, fragmented alliances, and a redefinition of cooperation frameworks.
“The task before nations is not only to manage uncertainty but to confront trade, financial, and energy imbalances,” Sitharaman said.
India’s Capacity to Absorb External Shocks Is Robust
Despite global turbulence, Sitharaman affirmed that India’s economic resilience is intact.
- India’s shock-absorbing capacity stems from a domestically driven growth model, with consumption and investment maintaining a steady share of GDP over time.
- This reliance on internal demand drivers shields the economy from external volatility like oil shocks, currency fluctuations, and geopolitical disruptions.
“India’s rise as a stabilising force is neither accidental nor transient,” Sitharaman said, attributing it to a deliberate mix of policy choices and structural strengths.
Resilience vs. Leadership: India’s Strategic Moment
The Finance Minister offered a broader vision for India’s role in the global economic order:
- Resilience must not only be a defensive buffer but evolve into a platform for global leadership.
- India’s economic leverage is increasing, driven by reforms, digital infrastructure, and energy transition investments.
She cautioned that current global dynamics present both opportunities and vulnerabilities. The nation’s future will depend on how decisively it navigates this transformation.
“Our choices will determine whether resilience becomes a foundation for leadership or merely a buffer against uncertainty,” she said.
Structural Transformation: The New Global Reality
Sitharaman characterised the present economic environment as one of permanent transformation, not just a post-pandemic aftershock.
- Strategic rivalries, wars, and realignments in global partnerships are redrawing economic boundaries.
- Emerging coalitions are reshaping financial flows, supply chains, and energy access.
This shift necessitates strategic recalibration by all countries, including India, to secure economic sovereignty and inclusive prosperity.
