Indo-Korean Center in Balewadi recognized as Western India’s first official TOPIK Test Centre

Pune becomes Western India’s hub for Korean language certification

The Youthbuild Foundation’s Indo-Korean Center (IKC) in Balewadi has been officially designated as a TOPIK Test Centre by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED), South Korea. This recognition makes Pune the only city in Western India to host the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), a globally recognized language certification.

Why the new TOPIK Test Centre matters

• Direct access for learners: Students, professionals, and Korean language enthusiasts across Western India no longer need to travel to distant cities for the exam.
• Gateway to opportunities: The certification is essential for university admissions in Korea, employment in Korean companies, visa applications, and career advancement.
• Skill-based evaluation: Introduced in 1997, TOPIK evaluates reading, writing, and listening skills. It offers two categories: TOPIK I (Levels 1–2) for beginners and TOPIK II (Levels 3–6) for advanced learners. The certificate remains valid for two years.

Upcoming exam schedule in Pune

The IKC successfully hosted the 100th TOPIK exam on May 11, 2025, and is now preparing for the 103rd session on November 16, 2025.

Leaders emphasize cultural and educational impact

Dr. Eunjoo Lim, Director of IKC and King Sejong Institute Pune, highlighted the significance of this development:
“TOPIK is more than a language test — it is a key mechanism for building human capital and strengthening Korea–India collaboration in education, culture, and industry.”

Adding to this, Sanjib Ghatak, Founder of IKC, emphasized the role of the centre in broadening cultural exchange and opening global opportunities for Indian learners.

Future plans for Korean language education in Pune

Beyond the TOPIK Centre, IKC runs the King Sejong Institute Pune, offering structured Korean language courses and cultural exchange programs with support from South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

Looking ahead, from 2026, the centre plans to:

• Conduct three TOPIK sessions annually.
• Introduce career-linked education programs.
• Expand corporate collaborations to boost job opportunities.
