The Wizard of AI: Classic Film Becomes Immersive Experience

AI Reimagines The Wizard of Oz for Vegas Sphere’s 360° Experience

With advanced resolution upgrades and AI-generated scenes, the iconic film is reborn for the world’s largest LED screen — without rewriting its legacy.

A Classic Gets a Cutting-Edge Upgrade

Starting August 28, the Las Vegas Sphere will debut its first-ever classic movie screening: The Wizard of Oz. But this isn’t a simple re-release — it’s an ambitious, AI-enhanced cinematic reinvention, designed to fill the venue’s staggering 160,000-square-foot wraparound screen.

  • The original 1939 film is being resurrected in ultra-high resolution.
  • Through AI outpainting, the classic frame expands into an immersive 360° world, complete with extended landscapes and enhanced visuals.

A 2,000-Person Effort to Honor the Original

Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan revealed that the AI transformation is part of a large-scale production involving more than 2,000 people.

  • The goal: pull viewers into the film, not alter its story.
  • “Our standard on this was not to modify the film at all,” said Dolan. “But to try and bring you into the film, as if you were in the studio when it was shot.”

This means using AI to extend scenes with original actors and settings — not replacing or rewriting them.

Outpainting: A Magic Trick with Machine Learning

The process of AI outpainting involves generating visual content beyond the original camera frame, using machine learning to mimic the style and detail of the original footage.

  • As described by Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz, a once-grainy close-up of Dorothy is now “richly detailed.”
  • Beyond her face, AI reconstructs the Yellow Brick Road, Scarecrow, and the distant mountains of Oz — all seamlessly imagined to match the original look and feel.

Walking a Fine Line Between Restoration and Reinvention

The project reflects a growing trend in AI-assisted media restoration, where the challenge lies in amplifying rather than altering classic works.

  • No scenes have been rewritten or re-edited.
  • Instead, the Sphere experience aims to extend the viewer’s presence within the film, offering a kind of cinematic immersion never before possible.

It’s a bold mix of nostalgia and technology, aimed at capturing the awe of a new generation while preserving the charm and intent of the original masterpiece.
